I started watching a documentary on food waste. But I've also seen it talked about elsewhere in the media. It got me thinking and wondering how much people waste food and their reasons.

Personally...
I grew up in a family that probably didn't waste much food. My mom would shop at a discount store that sold food past the "best by/use by" date. So, I grew up knowing that shelf-stable food (canned goods, boxed goods) was generally safe to eat past that date. If cheese grew mold, we just cut off the moldy part. Fruit & vegetable scraps and egg shells got composted. Mom would freeze fresh meat so it didn't go bad before we used it. Dad would make "garbage plates" with leftover food on the weekend. etc.
But now that I'm an adult & I live alone, I do find myself throwing food out. I try to be conscious about what is in my fridge, but sometimes I don't finish things before they go bad (grow mold, smell different).

What about you?

So important topic here and I think food waste issue has recently been on news alot and I know many people feel bad about throwing food away, so do I. Today I read that in Finland (where I live) every person throws away around 20-25kgs of food in a year (and this is per person, so in a family of 4 its ~100kg/year).
In Finland some products such as fish or meat products literally say "use before d/m/yyyy" and others, like packed vegetables and eggs which can possibly be good even after the past date are marked "best before d/m/yyyy".

So yeah, when it comes to eggs for example and they are past date, I break the egg into the glass so see if it is still fine. Some other foods have similar tricks too.
I think the best way here to test if the food is still okay is to look, smell and/or taste it.
Luckily where I live we have a nice recycling system, so if I must throw something to away, I can recycle it to bio waste.

Wow. I heard it was 25% of what we buy, but the source didn't say how many kilos that is.

Also, cool that your area has bio waste.

Oh yeah, I just looked up more about it and in fact 30% of all of the produced food in world goes to waste. (I guess this is what you meant:))
And this 20-25kg/person/year was Finland's statistics, I don't know if it's good or bad stats but I know for sure that Finland has started working on the issue :)

Edit: just wanted to add that it's also possible to prevent waste by properly planning your meals for the week and if you see something is going to pass the date anyway, prepare something out of it for your next meal. This has helped me alot to prevent waste. :)

So, I rewatched the statistics part of the "Just Eat It Documentary". Jonathan Bloom says 1/3 of the food raised or grown globally is wasted. That's your ~30%. (I imagine this type of study is hard to do and the exact %s vary.)

But, then, he goes on to say there was a study in New York, U.S.A. and that it found most of the food waste was from households, not restaurants, farms, or other businesses. In New York, households threw away ~25% of what they bought!
This was both surprising & appalling. I thought most of the food waste would be from restaurants, school cafeterias, hospital cafeterias, or other places where they prepare food in large batches, serve it, and throw away the rest.

Yes, TokiKonoe, great idea to plan meals for the week.
I'm usually not good at planning for the whole week, but sometimes I can plan for a few days. Ex. If tonight I have pasta for dinner, I should eat it for lunch tomorrow and then, maybe the next day if I still have leftover, I can add it to soup or something else.

For me i was raised to finish my plate and never waste. i grew up poor so wasting was not an option for me. When i had food in my plate, i ate it, even if i didnt like it.

I've heard a lot about food waste and sadly I don't know nearly as much as I should about this topic. But I can speak for my experience, I grew up in a family that main source of food came from discount stores.  And I know I can only speak for my own, but I believe the best course of action for everyone would be to buy food only that is necessary. To bring a list when you're shopping at a grocery store so that you don't spend extra and don't end up throwing food out when it's bad.

i also come from a family that wouldn’t waste much food so now in my adult life i try to follow through in different little ways - only throw out food when it’s visibly bad or smells funny, not immediately as it reaches expiration date; i ask for a container and bring the leftovers from my restaurant meal home; i also segregate bio waste.

John Oliver did a episode on food waste in the states. I can't imagine it's that different in Canada but I know that the PC brand frozen fruit is "imperfect" which is actually a good idea because fruit that looks wonky is often fine but is unlikely to make it to your produce aisle.

Like other commenters I grew up eating the food in front of me and getting food from food banks, etc. I live with my mom (yes, as an adult) and I know that we do sometimes waste food bc of mom's adhd (doesn't stick to grocery lists) and my brain fog (i sometimes pull out food to eat then fall asleep before doing anything with it), but I feel like we're still pretty good. We have a lot of tupperware (we keep it in a mesh laundry basket in the corner of the kitchen, lol) and we got a chest freezer just before covid so we actually do pretty well with leftovers. We also buy most of our vegetables frozen, which I think has a massive effect on our food waste because we used to totally forget about half eaten broccoli heads until they were flowering.
