I always found it interesting when people would get extremely riled up about fur but not about leather (which is way more common and in so many products), and also didn't give a frick about eating meat, etc.

Anyhow, this is a complicated question. The leather/fur industries are cruel but I don't think they have the impact that nearly reaches the animal food industry. Most pollution is caused by the deforestation of trees for cropland to feed animals who then feed us. Cows produce a lot of methane which contributes to the greenhouse effect.

Regardless, in theory, all the animal-related industries are in some aspect bad for the environment. But will people give things up for the sake of the environment - most do not. I think the best way to approach this if you wanted to be environmentally conscious is not to buy any new leather/fur goods, buy pre-owned/thrift'd ones if need be. Many synthetic leathers/furs exist as well, but often this supports another issue - fast fashion (which is a human rights issue).

Seems like no matter what someone or something gets hurt. Just try to take the option that makes the least amount of impact I guess :/.

Fur is obviously bad for animals, so I don't think you could quite get away with saying you love nature while wearing fur. I'm not sure how bad the environmental impact is from the fur industries, but as Esuna pointed out, any industry that uses animals is going to have at least some negative impact on the environment. Leather is definitely very bad for the environment though, both for the reasons Esuna mentioned, as well as others like
this:

First established in the mid-19th century, Kanpur is now the country's biggest producer of leather products. Its leather is exported across the world, with 95 percent of its output destined for Western markets including those in the US, UK and Germany.

The success comes at great environmental and social cost. Pollution from the tanneries is destroying the ecology of the local Ganges River and scarring residents in the form of life-threatening illnesses.

The city is now notorious for having some of the country's worst water pollution problems yet the tannery industry continues to discharge waste water laced with toxic chemicals, such as chromium, freely into local waterways.

This water is channeled onto local farmland, poisoning the soil, entering the food chain and accumulating in local ecosystems. At greatest risk are the people who work in the tanneries and farmers who work daily with the toxic and highly acidic water.

Local residents suffer an array of health troubles, a result of the bioaccumulation of dangerous toxins over decades. Health problems include cancers, mental illness, child development issues and skin diseases.

I like the idea of pineapple and mushroom leather. Much more environment and animal friendly. :)
