I think it depends on the dish. The spices I used (mustard seed, cumin seed, turmeric, hing) do not have heat. So, it makes sense that it's not spicy-hot. I have noticed these milder spices are used in other Indian breakfast items, like biscuits.

I set some aside to feed my young nephew when he wakes up. Then, my partner added some red pepper to the adult portion to give it more heat.

I'm at work and a co-worker has a litter of Puppies to find homes for. I'm tempted... they're so cute.

I love some Indian style foods, but unless you're near a genuine family run café it's always a let down or way too spicy for me.

Have a super afternoon/evening/morning wherever you are in the world.

If you want to try, here are a few versions I found online:
Indian Healthy Recipes has 2 poha versions on this page. One is served hot; the other is a cold dish with yogurt.
Veg Recipes of India uses shredded coconut.

Both the links above use peanuts. I used 1/4 cup cashews & 1/4 cup almonds instead. It can also be served with lentils for a nut-free dish.

It uses a special flattened rice (poha) that may be difficult for some players to find. (I got it from my mother-in-law.)
If you can't find flattened rice, I suspect that you could try to make it with whatever white rice is available where you live. It wouldn't be authentic, but it should still take on the flavors of the dish.

Janeze, I am learning to cook Indian because my partner is Indian. I think more experienced Indian chefs cook by feel (as do experienced chefs from any culture). Those of use learning to cook something don't have the same experience so we don't know when to add more of something to get the "right" taste or texture.
