I think that people should just read whatever they want without being judged for it. If you want to read classics, or fanfiction, or YA fiction, go for it because it really doesn't matter at the end of the day. Just enjoy it really!!

omg anything by toni morrison! she was my favorite author in high school and i *ADORE* her books. i would probably recommend Sula or Jazz first and then read Song of Solomon. I love books that are mostly rooted in reality but have an occasional touch of the occult, spiritual, or just general trippiness. its so like deliciously creepy and unsettling but i love it. ESPECIALLY the way morrison uses it since its usually a critique or a reference of something in black history.

One of my new favorite books is Lakota Woman by Mary Crow Dog. She was a Native American activist and in AIM in the '70s. Her writing is phenomenal and an excellent autobiography. <3

station eleven is one of my favorites ! i read it once in high school and went back to it when the pandemic hit since it's centered around how art in many different forms persists in the face of tragedy and the ways is switches between character's points of views at different points of their lives to show just how they intersect tickles my brain :)

currently reading the third book in the broken earth trilogy by NK Jeminson! the series as a whole is really cool- kinda an exploration on the consequences of like. societal hubris and then a society that is straight up based on pure, pure survival. the world it's set in is much more tectonically active than ours, so much so that society as a whole is built around preparing for months to even years without sunlight, ability to farm food, etc, and it really really is brutal in parts in a way that feels real and almost just resignation to tragedy the moment you're born. the writing style itself is also very interesting. The Fifth Season, the first book in the series, won a hugo as well. Definitely reccomend!

if you like fantasy, read anything by brandon sanderson!! i used hate fantasy/sci-fi bc of how awfully women always seemed to be written, but my friend got me into his mistborn series and when i tell you i'm hooked,,, i burned through all 700k words of the first trilogy in less than a month and now a few months later i've read practically half of everything he's published. terry pratchett is another author i definitely recommend if you like more comedic fantasy, especially his discworld series: it was written between the 1970s-2010s, but the views in it about gender and equality and the like (even in the first few books) had me consistently amazed that it wasn't written just last year. anyways i'm gonna cut this ramble short now, i'm just absolutely obsessed and never get much chance to talk abt them :')
