There are events leading up to Christmas day itself but what we really do is go around the neighborhood or down here we refer to it as " house to house". We bring drinks and food items to share with everyone. The main or best dish served during that time is ham. Lots and lots of it. lol there are exceptions like turkey or chicken.
That sounds really nice! Where are you from?
I'm from a small island in the Caribbean. St.Lucia :)

Christmas overshadows the other celebratory festivals that happen around the same time. We all know what Christmas is about and when it happens but what about other cultures religious festivals? How many of us who are non-Jewish know when Hanukkah takes place or even what it means? What about Paganism's Yule and Winter Solstice? Or Pancha Ganapati (how many of us know which religion that is from?) Hey Bodhi Day is approaching fast and no one has even mentioned it.I sometimes feel a bit bad that these other celebrations are often left in the dark by a lot of the world. I and my fellow westerners more often than not don't even know that there are other religious festivals in December, other than the big whiz bang shindig that we've made Christmas into.

The commercialism of Christmas, has lead to much of the lack of any understanding of any religious meanings for the holiday by the common citizen. At least in America as I observe it.  It begins Thanksgiving Day.  Black Friday.
I'm shocked that the name hasn't been protested as much as saying Merry Christmas has become so offensive in many stores.  Merchants and people gift shopping takes away from any spiritual meaning during this mad dash of credit spending by both religious and atheist alike, people.   I try not to think about it to much, and do my own thing.  I actually make it one very long holiday, so I just avoid the stores, and the grumpy people and only venture out after the sun goes down, and most people are at home.

That is exactly why I created this discussion! I was hoping people would share some other holidays they're going to be celebrating, and maybe get some cultural insight within the community. I'm glad you pointed that out, because I feel the same.

Luxokay, your tea advent calendar sounds amazing!

I'm really excited for Christmas this year. I've also got a job which is great, but I'm working so much lately that there's hardly any time to get all of my shopping done. Started to wrap presents and make homemade gift tags. I'm going for a super kitsch theme again this year, because that's what christmas is all about for me. My tree needs to have coloured lights, eclectic novelty glass baubles, a load of tinsel and be super camp!

SuperGlamorousGirl!!

Tea advent calendar! That must be really cool! I love tea <3 <3

I really like New Year's. It usually sets me on a special, happy mood. It's nice to see another year go and a new one come. Also introspection time.

I'm not a big fan of Christmas. I consider the concept it began with is a celebration for the religious ones. Then the Santa thing came and it went massive, and not many people celebrate its real meaning. My parents never made me believe in Santa. I guess I missed the fun, LOL. Maybe that's why I don't like it :P

Anyway, I try to put a good face to it. My bouyfriend and I are kind of Star Wars freaks, so I made a DIY Death Star decoration starting with a defective ornament I found at the market ^_^
