Hello citizens of Secville,

Welcome to The Flutter, Issue 9. This week we'll be discussing influencers!

---

I suppose the term 'influencer' is pretty loosely defined now, though it's supposed to mean someone who influences others in its most basic form. Today, however, anyone with even a minor social media following considers themselves an influencer—to the detriment of celebrities and other real 'influencers'. Personally, I find people who call themselves influencers to be arrogant and oblivious to their actual lack of meaningful influence. The stories of self-proclaimed influencers attempting to rise above and beyond their stations in life also don't help their case, with tonnes of negative public interactions and eyebrow raising stories of influencers paying others in exposure.

What are your opinions on influencers: the term itself and the people who use it, Secville?

Love,

Influencers are a real hit or miss in this generation. It's one of those things where they are so many variables for how they build success. You've got the dancers/singers, the comics, the trolls, the artists, gamers, and so on. It's such a loose category because there are so many things you can influence. Joe Rogan is built off of shock value and making people angry because of his opposing opinions, you got Markipier and Jackspeticeye who are pillars of youtube, and built a community with the people there with common interests. MacDoesIt and Danny Gonzolez are both comics who make jokes about problem people and point out the problems in a satirical way. All of them have millions watching them. There are so many more I could list but that's just to show how much someone could go and I count them as influencers simply because they do hold a strong opinion in many people's eyes whether it's good or bad.

Anyways <3 sorry for the essay.

The word influencer reminds me of influenza, so pretty much they are like a flue - not wanted, boring and persistent.

Lmfao, I always think of influenza too. At least I know I'm not alone in that.

I just think it's horrid that just about anyone with no talent, skills or particular knowlegde on anything can become an influencer and then so many people go around parroting their opinions as gospel. I really don't even understand what's their function and they definitely shouldn't be earning so much money for doing the absolute minimum. The worst ones are the ones that have no knowledge on certain important topics, but still have no problem sharing their completely wrong opinions with the world even tho they have a huge platform so spreading misinformation is a dangerous game. Just looking at the way so many of them recently have been making fun of and spreading horrible myths about domestic abuse and rape makes my skin crawl and if the social media companies cared about anything other than profit they would have punished them for it.

The only worthwhile influencers are the ones with actual skills and even then, they should be influential only in their main area. For example, I play Diablo II the video game still. On youtube there's two people I check in on video-wise because they've played for SO LONG that they know all the tips and tricks for the game. They are influencers, because when Blizzard remastered the game, these two people were asked to be on panels and do pre-release reviews of the gameplay and their opinions shaped the game further prior to relase. So, I would definitely take their advice in regards to the game because of their experience.

But outside of gaming, what's the point?

I follow a couple of makeup review vloggers, but that's just because I want to keep up on drugstore level vegan/cruelty free brand releases. I'm not there for techniques and the beauty influencers sphere is toxic and filled with too much drama. I used to be amused by the Simon Cowell level reviews done by Jeffree Star but he's proven to be a... not good personality, shall we say?

I value reviewers who swatch and test out products on their face and describe their experiences with product because makeup is costly for what they are and makeup that looks pretty in a box but nasty on your face is just... too much a risk for me. I need to see it on other people.

And frankly, I find it ridiculous that there are "lifestyle" influencers when they don't have half the sheer ability of Julia Child or Martha Stewart or Oprah Winfrey, let alone the ridiculousness of Gwyneth Paltrow. You'd notice that these past actual influential lifestyle people had skills. Cooking. Entertaining. Curating a life based on certain aesthetics and values.

I get that, at least.

These modern social media-based jokers are not it. As old fashioned as magazine and tv show media is, the difficulty of getting in has a filtering affect; are you really GOOD and do you actually have a Point of View that people want to pay attention and pay money for? Without that, it's just filmed narcissism in action.

The last paragraph basically sums it up. The advent of social media has done away with the filter IMO and now even people that offer little to nothing somehow find themselves with the potential for a huge platform. I'm hoping this dies down a bit in the next 10 years though, because it's getting very, very, very, very tedious to hear about minimally talented—if at all—people who are famous for just existing.
