Most of the relationship & dating threads I found here were for in-game relationships. But, relationships are a huge part of life. I wanted to start a place to share successes & frustrations.

We do not discriminate. Relationships refers to any two (or more) living beings, not just boyfriend-girlfriend. This includes platonic (non-sexual) relationships, like friendships. If you want to vent about relationships with family members or co-workers, that's fine too. Relationships is actually a really broad topic, come to think of it.

Personally, I think relationships can be really hard to maintain. But, you know, adulting is tough stuff.

relationships are incredibly hard to maintain!! and i feel like living with disorders just makes them 20x harder. i find it very hard for me to maintain familial and platonic relationships, and i've had romantic struggles as well.. but my current relationship is very good and i'm happy to be with my s/o! i've had my ups and downs in my life but i'm hoping to grow and hopefully not have my mental stuff get in the way of everything

Part rant, part question about others experiences.

So, the most serious relationship I had ended December 2019. We took a "break" bc my depression was very bad. Well, really, I was dealing with bad emotional blunting as a side effect of my medication. This meant that I couldn't feel anything, even love, which obviously doesn't work well in a relationship.
So, we took a break. I changed meds. Emotions returned. Great.
Pandemic came. I lost my job & then my home. Not a good time to date.
It also gave me time to think.
I think we wanted different things. I think they wanted physical things, like sex & my cooking. Whereas, I really need an emotional intimacy instead.

They & I  have talked about it. Their parents were never married but were like fuckbuddies who got pregnant & then decided to stop having sex. They never even lived near each other but would drive 2 hrs to meet up for sex & dinner.Whereas, I come from a 2-parent household & watched them talk every night.
So, I think maybe it's like nature/nuture. They take after their parents. I take after mine.

I'm curious. What do other people look for in a partner?
Do you take after your parent(s)?
Has anyone made it work with someone who wants different things?

Im dating my beautiful butch girlfriend. She's amazing and a hopeless romantic. I'm deeply in love with her and hate that we will have to do long distance soon.

There's a song about "breaking up was easy in the 90s."

So true. Even with friendships, not just romantic relationships.

I mean, I got hurt badly by someone who "ghosted" me back then before "ghosting" was a term. But that was because we were in school together. If she saw me in the hallway, she would literally run the other direction. We accidentally ended up near each other at a sporting match once. She got up and left--her mother & sister were still there looking bewildered.

But, I mean, it was easier in that we didn't text or have social media or all these digital connections.

We weren't talking in-person. We weren't talking on the phone. Boom. So much easier than having to try to block all of someone's accounts.

The comment you made about parents is 100% the reason you both wanted different things. Even if you had a great upbringing, your parents' traumas get passed down to you/ we seek to make up for what we didn't get in our upbringing through out partner. So for example, my parents got divorced when I was 16, so I am always scared that is going to happen to me. However, I perceive us to be the first generation to properly understand generational trauma, so we need to learn to undo habits, and realise out relationships are not/do not have to be replicas of our parents ones. I am in a great relationship w my boyfriend, its almost been two years, and whenever I feel my insecurities arise I need to evaluate where they are really comign from. If anyone want to chat about love and relationships w me drop me a message coz i love to speak about it!
