Heydi

Personally i understand why different clothing sizes would be the difference size, since majority of clothing cost is manufacturing and materials and as much as it is unfair for everyone to not have equal access to clothing, it would be unfair to spread the cost out making the smaller sizes paying for a portion of larger sizes.
but that being said a $10 difference is insane!! If there are the same number of seams, then it doesnt make sense. If the design was altered for a different sized body, requiring more labour in pattern making, sampling, and production I can see why there would be a price difference. (number of seams is like the biggest cost labour wise).

So i feel like
If the design is the exact same just have an equal cost. Itll only be like a dollar for the smaller options.
If the design is altered and the garment is a different style. Then make it, the cost for that style.

Honestly wild only semi related take
I think all first hand clothing should be more expensive. Priced at the result of ethical labour with sustainably focused production and design, im talking $60 AUD tops. As the overconsumption of clothing is the reason why the fashion industry is so detrimental to the environment. More expensive clothing would discourage overconsumption, along with encourage people to buy affordable second hand clothing, of which there is an insane surplus. We produce second hand clothing at a rate the demand for it could never keep up with.

As someone who is currently undertaking a degree in fashion design and has worked in the industry, the difference in fabric for smaller and larger sizes, stitch count etc is honestly negligible and the cost of difference in production would be pennies. so to price them so differently is purely greed and taking advantage of consumers lack of knowledge of the manufacturing process. A majority of the cost of production is within the formulation, drafting cutting etc of the original patterns

aha im also doing a fashion degree KittenBabie thats so cool!! but yeah say theyres what a 0.1m difference in length needed it should not be $10 more. and yeah total number of stitches, that would be stupid. I can only see an increase of seams having an impact, as then that’s more steps in the production line and more people to pay

no, you pay for more fabric, and you pay for taking up more space, and you pay for being an abnormal size x

that’s so cool omg! and yeah exactly, i could understand in the case of patterning differences with more seams like you said, but that only really happens with independent or custom pieces

↑ came here to say that too, im glad theres more fashion students here to answer this bs lol
if the more fabric = higher cost logic actually happened, every size of a piece of clothing would be a different price

Heydi

aha at this point we need our own little support forum thread for our fashion studying skjkasdn. Sorry for being off topic!
I'm still into my first year so this is a question for the other fashion students. When theyre doing layplans do they do multiple sizes at once? as we have only worked with my uni's size 10, so we have only done lay plans with one size. So like the whole thing about how you will often lay down multiple sets at once to be efficient, would you do the same varying sizes. Like laying down size 16's and 8's on the same lay plan.
I hope my question makes sense.
But in that case it would make calculating the cost of an individual size so much more difficult, and therefore pointless to charge the sizes differently.

omg girly this is such a cool take tbh~ i personally cannot afford to spend $60 on a piece of clothing but i think i am beyond willing to spend the extra money to get a piece of clothing that is sustainably produced and environmentally sustainable~~ ( ´ ω ` ) i usually thrift my clothes but there are significant downsides, that being that sometimes i find cute clothes that arent in my size, or clothes that are already worn and wear out pretty quick! either way i think sustainable fashion is rly important
