Hi yall today i decided we are goin to talk about punk fashion because irl,i dress punk and because i want to so. bababoie
SO LETS START
Punk fashion is defined by a disregard if not outright disdain for fashion norms. It isnt something that can be bought, you gotta diy that shit urself. Anti establishment, anarchy and the desire for shocking/dismantling the status quo, are all a part of being a punk. However a common brand a lot of punks wear is doc martins. Doc martens originally were a cheap and comfortable work boot that lasted a long time. Which is why it became a huge part of punk culture. Black docs with colored laces, became a way to show what kind of punk you were. Lace code is still used in some places.
Different countries and areas may have different meanings for lace code; however, here are some common ones.
Please note that lace code ONLY counts when they are ladder laced. Here is a list of lace color meanings.
Rainbow/lavender/purple: gay pride
Yellow: anti racist- commonly used by SHARPS (skinheads against racial prejudice)
Red: neo nazi/national front groups
White: white supremacist/kkk member/neo nazi
Blue: cop killer
Some areas consider this lace color anti cop/anti police harassment. I dont recommend wearing this one though because police may target you.
black/green: neutral. Green can mean eco activist though
Punk fashion entered mainstream fashion specifically by Vivienne Westwood (and the Sex Pistols). She is directly responsible for the punk influences we still see today in fashion. Her boutique in London was where early punks would meet up. She made clothes to provoke and to inspire. Her designs challenged gender norms and fashion norms, by using materials such as rubber, which had been mostly used as fetish wear before this.
Now here are some lesser known punk subsets. Just to make sure i really establish this, punk in general is against racism and classism. However some subsets of punk lean into certain political beliefs.
Riot grrrl
Riot grrrl politics are mostly about feminism and female empowerment. Riot grrrl songs typically are about sexuality, and sexism. This subset of punk started when a group of women got together to talk about held a meeting to address sexism in punk spaces. Examples of riot grrrl punk are, mommy longlegs, lunachicks, and of course the iconic bikini kill and bratmobile.Afro punk
Afro punk specifically refers to the involvement of black people in punk music. Punk music in general, has roots in blues, R and B music. Both of these genres were started by black people, and without them we would not have the genre and style we have today. Big Mama Thornton is a cultural icon who directly influenced rock and roll. (and through that helped to create punk indirectly). Her song, Hound Dog, sat at no 1 for seven weeks on the billboard R and B chart. Examples of afro punk include, Pure Hell, Bad Brains, and my personal favorite, Death.
Overall punk fashion is made of easy to find or practical items that have been altered to shock or go against fashion norms. The politics are anti racism and establishment. i hope you learned something new and if you didn't okay then.
