I recently went to a public event last month and while I was there, I noticed an overwhelming number of obese adults and, sadly enough, children. About 40% of Americans are obese. I know the early 2000s were harsh with their media and magazines ripping into young girls' bodies but, the way to fight that isn't swinging the pendulum all the way back where being morbidly overweight is normalized. I can't even defend Americans when other countries talk about how we eat and how much we weigh because they're right, honestly. we do eat crazy shit and we eat too much.
we are in a rare time where food is more accessible than it has ever been, we don't have an under-eating problem, we have an over-eating one.
source: The prevalence of obesity among U.S. adults 20 and over was 41.9% during 2017–March 2020.1 During the same time, the prevalence of severe obesity among U.S. adults was 9.2%. This means that more than 100 million adults have obesity, and more than 22 million adults have severe obesity.

hi, it’s always interesting to hear people’s opinions on this. as someone who lives in the US and in a rural area, I love sharing thoughts about this. as many may know, healthier food options, like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and lean meats are often significantly more expensive than calorie dense and processed foods. that extra expense, be it a dollar or two, can add up significantly when you involve factors like family members, accessibility to stores/food pantries, and people who live paycheck to paycheck!

in terms of accessibility, there are also many places (usually rural and low-income communities) that don’t have close access to full-service grocery stores. these are called food deserts! while there may be one within a 10 mile range, it is once again about accessibility! there is usually some lack of transportation or ability to get from one place to another to be able to get these foods. many people will then rely on convenience stores and fast-food chains, which don’t typically offer healthy/nutritious choices. it’s not always about choosing the right food, it’s about whether the right food is affordable AND available. the US absolutely has an overconsumption issue, but that simplifies the issue too much. there are so many other socioeconomic factors that also play a role in this.

I used to be obese back in 2023, and I felt bad about how much being obese costed at that time. I remember eating 5 cans of pasta in a single sitting and just drowning everything in cheese. Especially stuff that didn't need it. To be honest, I think that there was a reason why I did it. Probably was at my worst when the one person who I cared about passed away at that time and I just wanted to eat the pain away... I am okay now, losing weight was tough, but I wouldn't trade it for anything else in the world.

strong agree on all of this. so tired of fatness being attributed to poor choices and 100% in someone's control when it's not actually. and im speaking from personal experience here. a lot of it has to do with genetics, hormones and medical issues and socioeconomic factors like those examples. food is just one factor of many behind it. i would say that society's hatred of fatness and the harm from the stigma of being fat is often times more harmful than being fat itself. and diet culture is super harmful too

I think it's due to a lack of education on nutrition and eating habits along with peer influence. I used to be obese and whenever I'd bring up weight loss, I'd get bombarded with people saying I was "perfectly fine and healthy", and that I needed to stop listening to "unrealistic beauty standards". Apparently being skinny, (in a healthy way ofc not underweight) was unrealistic because it's something you have to work for if it's something you aren't; which isn't true at all. Also, when I did start looking for ways to lose weight, most information would be some diet plan demonizing a food group rather than lifestyle changes. Most things would be like "don't eat this, don't eat that, when really it was just moderation in my experience. On top of that, the extreme diet plans being promoted fueled people to think that being obese is ok and if you were skinny you were either starving yourself or just had a "fast metabolism" when it's really just your appetite and activity level. I will say it is harder for some people to be a healthy weight because of health conditions or how they grew up.
