Hope you enjoy. The concept behind my collection is my own kitsch inspired take on satirical propaganda for the matriarchal society contained within a beehive- A harmonious system run entirely by females, in which male “drones” are used exclusively for reproduction. I'm a feminist, but wanted to create a concept that sort of pokes fun of radical feminism by describing a whole world dominated by women. I looked took my inspiration from so many different things, such as the bright saturated colours in the photography of Martin Parr, Guy Bourdin and Miles Aldridge, feminist theory, music by 90s Britpop acts such as Pulp and Blur, the symbolism of bees in the folklore of different cultures, and stories about women and Goddesses in Greek mythology. I loved the idea of woman represented as the honey-giving Goddess, and that man would risk climbing the tallest tress just to taste this feminine sweetness (Oo-er. Sexy, no?). Goddesses from Greek mythology can by as cruel as they are kind, so the anger of this woman is also represented as a swarm/omen.
I am proud of my work, but I also kind of hate these clothes now since I spent the best part of a year designing them, making them and having to look at them constantly since the show finished - This is pretty normal for designers.
Some of the outfits are being lent to stylists. Such as the yellow clear plastic boiler suit look, and the red clear pvc skirt with the embroidered floral patent leather jacket, and the 3D flowered latex clutch bag (inspired by vintage swim hats!) - They were in Scotland the other week for a magazine's photoshoot! I'm just about to lend the yellow embroidered leather suit to a really cool independent Chinese fashion mag this week, and another stylist has contacted me recently asking to borrow looks.
