Thank you, Gertrudis, for speaking out. You're not alone in thinking this. As soon as I saw the theme, I texted my friend who also plays like, "YIKES." Lol. I waffled back and forth between abstaining from entering and trying to do something that is a nod to contemporary Asian culture rather than toying with historic looks.

I have no idea if even my K-pop idol look is appropriate enough. But my final decision was to attempt something in hopes of maybe improving the overall pool of entries, so that maybe less damage can be done. As my friend and I discussed, we suspect that tasteless looks will win and leave those most affected by this mess-up with even worse feelings about the situation.

Sometimes (Honestly, most of the time) an action's impact is more important than its intent, and I don't feel like anyone has crossed the line by voicing their discomfort. And I mean, this seems obvious enough, but a POC's feelings about how their race is being represented is more important than those who don't belong to it.

I'm definitely white lol, so in the end my feelings don't matter much, but I'm choosing to at least show my support for those affected who are being vocal. It's all I can do. If there's anything I can do for any of y'all, whether it's being someone to vent to in PMs, etc., I'm here! :)

Very well said, Railophone and I completely agree. I certainly wasn’t trying to color anyone specific which is why I was focusing on the activity (the contest)  rather than the participants.  I do realize that people from European countries may have a different view of the term then people who live in the US.  But as Alex said, this online community is very diverse, sothe perspectives of diverse populations have to be considered as well.

My issue is that, while we've established that the "bimbo player who shall not be named as I don't want this thread to be derailed" meant no ill will in her creation of this theme, bimboland had remained immobile/lackadaisical/dismissive on changing the name.
Keep the theme, but change the name. I don't see why it's so difficult.

Just go with Occidental as next month's theme, and we'll call it even. ;)

Jokes aside, as Railophone says this has already been discussed. Apparently, the term "Oriental" is now considered racist (at least in English) and should be avoided. But those of us that used it prior to this contest, either because we speak a different language where the term is not considered racist or because we're of a different generation that grew up with this term in our (neutral) History books, never meant any harm by using this word. Please consider this before you flat out accuse your fellow Bimboland residents of being racists, because that's not very nice either.

I apologize for having used the term "Oriental" in the past, and I apologize on behalf of the other players here that did the same. We didn't mean to offend anyone, but it's very clear that we did, so again, I'm sorry, the lesson has been learned.

I do wonder, though, how many players will opt out of this month's contest because they're now afraid of being labeled as racists if they play around with garments from other countries and cultures. And I do think that it's a pity that we can't all be a little bit more understanding towards each other, even when it's a matter of a caucasian using outdated terminology that in modern time has become offensive.

And last, just for the record, Oriental is not synonymous with Asian. (Please don't kill me.) Used correctly, for example in Art History (which was my field of study back in the days), Oriental only refers to a certain part of Asia, it does not include all of Asia. But I'm Norwegian, so I get the feeling I'm not allowed to point this out.
It is pretty understandable, the reason why the term is not considered racist in Norwegian and other languages - and that is simply because these are usually countries with no significant racial variety, therefore you guys just have not had the opportunity to listen and learn how does that make people feel. However, you have the opportunity to have this conversation now, here in Bimboland. And I don't think it should be dismissed or excused.
It's ok not to know that this or that term is offensive or outdated, especially in a language other than your native one. You don't have to apologize. But I do think everyone who didn't know should read carefully, and try to be more understanding about the feelings of those who are pointing this out.

Its not racist if it isnt meant to be racist. Stop putting negative meaning behind words that arent meant to offend anyone.

When you say this, you deny people the right to feel how they feel about History. You also take away their right to make others understand them and fix mistakes from the past.

I’m pretty sure we are playing a game called Miss Bimbo, soo...
There is plenty of “derogatory” slang in this game so I don’t think being sensitive over something so simple and unintentional is appropriate.
