In ancient Sparta at the shrine of Artemis Orthia (a combination of artemis and a local goddess) there was a ritual where young boys would have to steal cheese and then be whipped for it

Akitas are a breed of dog that originates from Japan. Their cousin is the shiba inu. During world war 2, Akitas almost went extinct due to america starving out Japan in effort to get them to surrender. People ate their dogs instead to survive. Efforts were made to recover the species and succeeded. After world war 2, soldiers came back from Japan, bringing back Akitas to america. This lead to another breed being established, the American Akita. American Akitas were bred to have broader shoulders and be bigger than their Japanese counterparts. They also have black masks instead of the white masks their Japanese counterparts have. Akitas are working dogs, traditionally used to hunt bear or boar. They are guard dogs, used to protect the home and children. Akitas are intelligent and loyal to their families. They enjoy being around their family, and will switch between rooms of the house simply hanging out with various members. They are very clean dogs and are easy to house train as they do not like going in the house and will attempt to hide their messes when an accident does happen. Akitas also do not shed. You groom them and then any hair will come out. They blow coat instead. Akitas have a double coat, a bottom layer of dense soft  fluffy fur and a top layer of guard hairs to keep out water. Their coats are very very soft and are enjoyable to pet, which is good because Akitas thrive off of being pet by their family. Akitas do not like strangers though, and can be anywhere from wary to downright aggressive to strangers. You should socialize them when they are young to avoid aggression. They also have a high prey drive as they are bred as hunting dogs. While Akitas will leave cats alone for the most part, other smaller animals are not safe. This requires training if you want your akita to do exist with other animals. However, this is easier as long as the other smaller animal is not a dog. Akitas do best as a single dog or in pairs with a dog of the opposite sex. Female Akitas are more aggressive and assertive than the males. in my opinion, you should get a female Akita if you want a guard dog for your family. Akitas will go room to room to check in members of the family (it’s really cute). Akitas require training and attention. They have a stronger bite than pit bulls, but will not attack people without reason. If you are being threatening to an Akitas person or family they will make their displeasure clear by standing in between you and their person or barking or in extreme cases, attacking to protect their family.

Long hair akitas
long hair Akitas are Akitas with a genetic mutation that makes them have a fluffier undercoat with little to no guard hairs. Long haired Akitas usually have a sweeter temperament and are more mellow than regular Akitas. Some will have guard hairs on their back, tail, and feet whereas others will have none. Long haired Akitas cannot be shown. They also do not shed as they are still Akitas and Akitas do not shed. They still are intelligent and good guard dogs. Don’t take their sweet temperament as meaning that they are stupid.

All in all Akitas are really great dogs and have an interesting history : P
