for those of us in the US, we just recently learned that a cheeto will be at the head of our government alongside a religious conservative republican, who i assume will be pulling the ropes. Of course, that's my opinion and it is subjective. What are y'all's thoughts and opinions on the current state on US politics?

i never thought that racist, sexist man who believes in social darwinism would be elected,
... honestly i thought someone will shoot him before that happens.

I'm must say I was very surprised... I wonder what this holds on the cards for South Africa... This is what i found. South Africa’s exposure to markets such as the USA and the UK is limited (compared to the exposure to Asian markets), but it is not immune to the fallout of big moves in those countries. For example, the so-called Brexit vote in 2016 had a short-term positive effect on South Africa (with the pound and the euro suffering in the after-effects), however the long-term impact is yet to be determined – likely only in 2017. Donald Trump emerging victorious cannot be dismissed – and with no solid position coming from his campaign on important policies, a Trump presidency spells uncertainty for markets linked to the US. The Eastern Europe, Middle East and African (EEMEA) region has relatively little exposure to US markets, with South Africa and Russia coming in at around 10% of domestic value. However, banking exposure data showing the amount of US credit in various countries, as a share of GDP for countries in the EEMEA region, is highest in South Africa, at 43% of GDP. This reflects the role of US banks in project and trade finance, as well as short-term financing through the balance of payments. With no real stance on economic policies coming from the Trump camp, focus moves to his geopolitical views – which he has been very clear on – namely a more “independent”, isolationist US. These views becoming policy could push investors into less riskier markets. Trump’s policies also point to warmer relations with Russia, which could antagonise other European nations, Nomura noted; while Trumps stance on the Middle East (and support for Israel) could lead to another significant dip in the oil price.Ultimately, with a lot of uncertainty, a Trump presidency could see South Africa become a negative trade market as investors move to safe-haven markets with minimal (or beneficial) exposure to the USA’s new stance (such as Russia and Hungary). A constrained Trump Presidency could see markets still operate normally; however, a more unconstrained one (especially on trade, immigration and foreign policy) might risk (selected) Emerging Markets (excluding South Africa) becoming a safe haven from the US for investors, and so flows may well remain supportive in either case. .

This is one of those moments that definitely had me thinking about my dual citizenship (mexico), but my family voted Trump despite being immigrants (except mom who is not a citizen but she still supported him). I've decided that instead of being passive for the next four years, I'm gonna try to make an impact and involve myself in protests and rallies and such.

I'm pretty shook up about just the number of people who had the mentality of voting for Trump without expressing publicly the desire to do so... There were some people at my jobs who were vocal in their support for him, and I'm not looking forward to seeing them in my upcoming shifts. It's going to be quite an interesting four years (I'm really hoping not eight), unless of course the Electoral Congress goes with the popular vote (Clinton), on the 29th of this month, which I may add has happened twice.
I did vote, for Clinton.

The Electoral College has never voted against the president elect....though yes, there have been state reps that voted against their individual state's popular vote via in the past...a "faithless elector" in other words

the sweet irony if this happens is that Donald Trump called for it in the 2012 election when the popular vote did not take office:

so yeah...that would be funny as all hell....because Obama won 303 vs 206...almost 100 more.  This year trump was +51...so surely if they go to popular vote he is a-o-k with it...I mean he pushed for it in the past right

what are the odds of enough electors to do a faithless electoral vote and move to Hillary...not very good...but I won't be stunned if Michigan does it

All this said...this was a crazy tight race for popular vote...so I don't imagine it gets trumped (ooo...that worked out nicely) by the college...but hey...Donald himself advocated for it...so by all means...grant his wish

problem with the popular vote is that it leaves smaller and rural communities almost voiceless

While it is a shock to the system I truly believe he was only saying things to get dumb people to vote for him (83% or something like that). When the GOP primaries were going on he was the most neutral republican and I think it's going to stay that way. He's already backing off his more extreme postions. His "draining the swamp" is basically considering all the old people you know and love in charge not shaking anything up at all.

I also look at him sitting there with Obama and he looks dumbfounded, sitting there like "now what?"

lol - I really think this is going to blow up more in the faces of his supporters than the dems.
