Like the thread title says, I'm curious to know what motivates people to learn a language, whether it be a total new language or a language you grew up with and sort of know but not completely and want to improve on

In my case I'm currently improving on my speech, writing, and reading in Frisian, I was being raised on and speaking the Frisian language the first 3 years of my life before my parents switched to only talking and teaching Dutch to me because I didn't understand it at that point and they didn't want me to have troubles in school later on because of it, but still talking Frisian with each other (hence why I can understand it but not speak it properly)

I'm improving on my Frisian because it's a slowly dying language and I want to help preserve the language that is a part of my and many others identity

so that i can have a european passport <3 /j

the main reason i SHOULD learn more languages is that i'm a translator and the more languages i know, the more i can help people (and also earn money.......). it's a bit sad actually, because i used to LOVE learning new languages in high school and that's what made me choose to study translation and interpreting in university, but now that it's my job, it's not as fun as it used to be </3

still though, learning new languages helps you meet new people everywhere and i'm so glad i became basically native in english all by myself <3 hope to do it in german and norwegian too!!

i've been learning Japanese for about 9 years now, i finished formal education but i'm still studying it! what motivates me is definitely work, i'm a translator/interpreter from Japanese and i also teach it, so i want to get as proficient as i can. i have JLPT N1 certificate which is the highest one can have, but... i'm still not fluent :/ i'd say i'm on a comparable level to my English level when i was 14-15, i was understanding 95% but i was able to use it myself correctly maybe 75% of the time... rn i'm learning by listening to as much Japanese as i can (tv shows, yt videos etc) as well as writing/speaking it with others. before someone asks why the hell do i work with Japanese when i'm not really 100% fluent at it: it's a very rare language in my country so the level i'm at rn is pretty satisfactory to employers :)

Being a translator is so cool!

I at some point want to use my refined Frisian skills to make entertainment video games with a Frisian language option because there are ZERO entertainment video games with a Frisian language option and I found exactly ONE educational game with West-Frisian as an option (and it wasn't on the first page of Google!)

In terms of the Frisian language in entertainment we have mostly music, TV, and radio but not video games and I'm going to change that

i think wanting to preserve Frisian is a great motivator for learning it!! I started learning Dutch at university because I already had a slight head start as my mum speaks it, but now that i have a Dutch Boyfriend™ i like that i can keep up with him and also communicate with him in his mother tongue<3

Becoming an english teacher in foreign places. I'm also in love with learning about different worlds and cultures, I love how people are so different. I'm insanely inspired by cultures and what they practice/do. I always wanted to live in Japan to work as an english teacher/escort (I can't tell anymore lol) and I really do love the idea of getting to know people outside your bubble.
