Back in the 90s and 2000s it would be unheard of for someone like this to do something like this.
During the 2010s something has gone wrong with American society.
Why do more young people have emotional and self control problems now?
It was only “unheard of” because there was little or no social media back then. (Ah, the good old days!) Terrible people (young and old) have always existed. They’re just more visible now.
I mean, people back then were more prompt to alcohol and didn't have social media to post it to the world to see
1. parents. A lot of parents are blatantly horrible parents. Some are abusive; I saw a story of how a lady who does hair had to defend a 16 yo from her mom, who was insulting her, stating she was not her daughter, and make her ugly. We still see boy moms (actually a growth of them on social media in the past year) whose sons can do no wrong, and girls are the problem or parents who create entitled children. It's just my publicized due to social media. All of this is creating modern-aged teenagers and adults who are emotionally unstable, etc.
2. social media. We have beauty standards, and teenagers may hang out with others online who do immoral things, if not illegal... its easy to access things that can traumatize people and can affect them.
3. we are also in a mental health crisis, and many cannot pay for help either. I feel a lot of things could be better if everyone had resources to it, but again it could not help some ppl at all.

but i think for me personally it's because no one cared enough to actually help me with my issues when they first arose, so they just got bigger and bigger

Not american, but when i was in middle school (well our equivalent of this) i studied with a girl who leaked the nudes of her "friend" because of jealousy. Unhinged people always existed, but i think social media contributed a lot to the current scheme of things (with exposition and in, my opinion, it makes people less empathic).

It's not specific to any generation, but younger people tend to be worse with this because they don't have the life experience to draw from to make good choices- and in the case of teens, the impulse control! Remember that their prefrontal cortex is under construction during puberty aka where rational decision making occurs. Additionally we only hear about it more because of more access to information like others said before.
I'll also echo xoxoHelloKitty and BlondeOnTheInside's points about bad parenting. Take a developing mind that's already at a disadvantage for making good choices, and offer them no guidance/bad guidance, and you can't be surprised when even the best of us need a few years to unlearn bad logic to relearn good logic.

Bullies get no consequences for their actions because their entitled parents bully the school administration into submission, or zero-tolerance policies reward bullies who can fly under the radar and punish victims that fight back. It takes the bullying escalating to a severe crime or getting the police to take it seriously for the adults to do something, despite the fact that lesser things would land adults in prison. It's often too little too late, and when you have someone who thinks they can act however they want without consequence you get people who escalate their behavior higher and higher until it's a tragedy.
