Not only racial stereotypes but, really strong sexism was prevalent back then. It feels like the rebirth of the 80s/90s stereotypes that were brought back to life and place there for a cheap giggle. Other than that, movies were also dark and edgy with a gloomy overcast with the superhero genre, fantasy, and sci-fi. Comedy wasn't my thing but, some of the movies aimed at women ...well, again there's that sexism that's hard to overlook. Heavens forbid she wants to follow her dreams to become something other than what's expected from society she's usually seen as "hard to deal with" and needs someone "special" to soften her up. If not that, it's the biological clock and she must be baby crazy - because apparently, that's what everyone wants despite the reality of it being a personal choice. The 2000s were obsessive with keeping people locked in a box and the previous decades. Personally, even though I'm not into movies as I would rather read I am glad in today's time diversity and gender expression are being shown instead of the same-old caricatures from the past.

On a personal note some movies released in the 00's are some of my faves (Legally blonde, ghost world, mean girls and less "girly" movies like oldboy, whale rider,persepolis too). The 2000's probably aren't my favorite decade of film but it is nostalgic for me and my childhood

Legally Blonde was a great movie, I was always rooting for Elle because it seemed like the movie was putting her feminine interests down to be seen as something...ashamed of which is still prevalent in society. I hated how they pitted the less "girly" characters against her and it wasn't until the very end they treated her with respect. I suppose this was the time of the "not like the other girls" that carried over in the 2010s for a bit with a dash of internal mysogyny.

For example, Kenji Mizoguchi made feminist movies from 20s to 50s and that was in Japan that still has huge problems with sexism to this day unfortunately.

Honestly I have a hard time watching anything from the early to mid 2000s because they feel super dated. I have an easier time watching stuff from the 90s, 80s, 70s, etc.
I kind of feel like for me movies from the 2000s are left better in the 2000s - Although this might be because I was born at the end of 1999 so I grew up with that stuff so it's kind of left better as childhood movies to me.
