The book, when I have time. The movie will do if it has good reviews!

In general, I prefer to read the book. I read a review of the 'novelization' of The Lord the Rings. The reviewer said, that while he liked the book, there was an obvious character (Tom Bombadil) that had been written for Robin Williams, but was cut from the film. Made me laugh.

I am assuming this was a joke since LOR original publication was in 1954 and Robin Williams would have been 3 years old since he was born in 1951...

In all honesty, I would prefer to see movies before reading books which definitely does not happen more often than not. I have seen movies that have inspired me to go read book series and I have watched movies based on books I have read. Sadly, I usually will not be as impressed with a movie after having read the books first and I find so much joy in the hidden gems and depth found once digging deeper into a book after watching a movie. Books are always more detailed and have so many more intricacies of the plot and characters that you just cant get in a 1.5 or 2 hour film. Reading a book first kind of ruins a movie for me because there are almost always parts of the story/character arc that are left out in a film.

Depends on what it is. If it's a good book, I'd want to read the book.

But sometimes films are based on books and you don't even know they are but if it's just an average film, or the story doesn't interest you, why spend more time reading the book? You maybe just watched the film to kill a couple of hours or help relax in that time but there would be better books to read perhaps.

Plus sometimes both the book and a film can be worthwhile in different ways - you can like the book and then also want to see the film of it, or there can be a book with such a different film adaptation, that is just inspired by the book, that both are good in very different ways.

Fingersmith by Sarah Waters is a great book, has a BBC miniseries adaptation that's quite close to it so if you like th ebook, you might like it also, but probably still prefer the book. But there is also a Korean adaptation called The Handmaiden which is different to the book of course, which is set in Victorian England, but is itself a very, very interesting as a film.

Interview with the Vampire is another one where I love the book and also enjoy the film a lot, but there are obviously things left out from the book in the film unfortunately - but in my opinion, the film has a much better ending than the book! The book is all great and then has a very anticlimactic ending lol.

Gone Girl is a good book but Rosamund Pike's performance in the film adds something to your enjoyment of the film that's not in the book. Jurassic Park is a book but don't most people prefer to watch the film?

With The Lord of the Rings there are definitely things in the films that might have added to people's enjoyment in some way - there were things in The Hobbit I liked which weren't in the book, especially in the second film, which I quite enjoyed but the first film was just tedious and I'd lost interest by the end of The Hobbit films. If you're going to make that many changes, you'd have to have enough confidence in yourself to be able to add things that would be on par with JRR Tolkien, which was clearly overconfidence.
