No offense but people on this site are waaay too easily triggered. The "g-word"? Really?!
Just off google:
gyp·sy
/ˈjipsē/
noun
1.
a member of a traveling people traditionally living by itinerant trade and fortune telling. Gypsies speak a language (Romany) that is related to Hindi and are believed to have originated in South Asia.
a nomadic or free-spirited person.

adjective

(of a business or business person) nonunion or unlicensed.
"gypsy trucking firms"

The word "gay" is still used in a derogatory way by many people in various cultures. But we still use it here freely. Does that mean we should never use the word "gay" simply because of the stigma that used to be behind it?

Definitions for words do change. To that same degree, a person's point of view also changes. I don't think AnastazjaNadia's suggestion was offensive.

Should we also stop using the word "bellydancer"? Because in some cultures, a "bellydancer" is a whore.

My apologies if I am coming off insensitive to those that find "gypsy" to be a slur. I believe the power is not just in the word but in the mind of the person behind it.

hey just for everyone's future reference that particular g-word is considered to be a slur by a lot of people of romani cultures and shouldn't be used as a synonym for boho, hippie, occult, etc :)

some kind of general spring is here theme where everyone dresses up as fairies and bugs and stuff. bunnies? eggs? whatever spring means to them

Channing, please think of the historical context of the word, and the amount of pain it has caused people; thousands have died, been displaced, have been targeted because of it. It’s not just some quirky word to describe fashion or a way of life. If Romani people (who the word is used against) considers it a slur, then it’s best to take their word for it and not use it.

Astronokid - Please don't think I am arguing with you, I'm just trying to explain my thought a little clearer. I do appreciate, respect and understand your message. I also agree not to use the word since I already noticed it was an issue for some users.

I provided the words "gay" and "bellydancer" as examples of words that ALSO have a negative historical context. Those words
haved caused pain, thousands have died, have been displaced, have been targeted. Guess what? They're still used freely on this site.

But times have changed, definitions have evolved to reflect those changes. Let's be proactive by promoting positive changes instead of holding onto and instilling negative traditional definitions/ways of thinking.

Just because I posted the definition of "gypsy" does NOT mean I am dismissing the historical context. We even have reality TV shows like: My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding. The word is not being used for the purpose of degradation and should no longer be used with prejudice.

All in all, my point is that I do not think the suggested theme was offensive (which I am fully allowed to feel and vocalize) and I do not agree with the level of sensitivity requested with how to address the word (gypsy as "g-word"). It is unfortunate that a website that is supposed to promote expression and individuality has to now be so restricted and censored out of fear of offending someone or fear of being attacked for speaking up. Especially when the context the word used, is not malicious, prejudice, or negative in any way.

Great idea but is it really worthy the effort since we have such a broken vote system for DQFC? I don't wanna hurt anyone, please... It's just a concern I have.

I see your point. <3

But even it the official contest is more of a lottery than a fair win by votes, it's still fun having a good theme to make an outfit for.

@channing: first of all, don't use "triggered" as a synonym for offended. i have multiple anxiety disorders and post traumatic stress disorder. i experience triggers every single day. do not take the language of the mentally ill and butcher it.

second of all: i am not romani. i have absolutely no claims to that word, so i do not say it. the romani people were exterminated during the holocaust alongside jewish people and to this day face human rights abuses. they are not adequately represented by the united nations because they are an ethnic minority, not citizens of a country of their own, and thus in many countries in europe discrimination against romani people is not considered discrimination at all, since they are not a protected class. i called it the g-word because it has been used against romani people for CENTURIES, and its usage as a synonym for a free-spirited woman is literally rooted in racist stereotypes. here is a post by a romani woman explaining it, warning for themes of sexual assault and genocide.

if we're going to talk about tlc, we should also mention some of their other shows theyve had, such as toddlers in tiaras, or shows that featured sexual abusers, such as 19 kids and counting and here comes honey boo-boo. so i dont think that channel and their shows are the example of cultural sensitivity and progressiveness that you seem to want to use them as. plus, even in the context of that show, it is romani people using that word for THEMSELVES, which they are allowed to do.

marginalized people trying to have a say-so in the language that is used to describe them is not limiting your expression. i find it ironic that you're talking about people being too sensitive when me and anastazjanadia had a very short and simple interaction that was over in two replies and you're the one bringing it back up and writing paragraph upon paragraph about it. calm down. this is the wrong hill to die on.
