Not everything in the shop is supposed to be fashion garments, there are a lot of costume items. As for the real world, gas masks are terrifying to look at, and that might be what appeals to certain groups.

I see a lot of gas mask usage in decidedly "Alternative" aesthetics. Like the cyber goths and all that. not sure about origin and all that... but it looks pretty neat lol.
Masks in general are really cool imo. They're very versatile in helping create a new persona/granting anonymity. hope this gives you a lil bit of insight, op

thanks for the insights guys!! i do see why it can be appealing for sure, & @Angel ya that's a good point, it really does tie in well with cyber goth aesthetic. i think it was interesting to me that there are many gas mask options in the shop & that there's so many players (or at least active players) who choose to use them. i guess im interested in why people are personally drawn to them and even incorporate them into casual/daytime looks!
tbh it's a super unique style so it does leave an impression, and maybe even challenges people to be a bit uncomfortable with something that's novel. idk!!

I'm going to speak from a fashion designer perspective and say that gas masks became "fashion accessories" through alternative fashion groups. I really enjoy alternative fashion, and gas masks are an item I have used in my designs a couple of times. It helps with adding a layer of mystery, since your face is covered, but is more interesting than just a mask. It's like using chains in your outfit, it doesn't serve a practical purpose, it's purely for aesthetic value, and it's not a thing most people would do. Another reason why I believe it has become so popular is the fact that the post apocalyptic aesthetic has become more popular over the years. A gas mask gives the illusion that the person is living in a toxic or radioacive area, which many people would think is cool or badass. Also sometimes a gas mask unfortunately will be used in the same way as horns by some people, just a cheap, quick and easy way to look edgy and cool, when in reality you're not. I hope I've been able to help a little bit!!
