I'm really into the goth style, been kinda put off bc ppl have told me that if you don't listen to goth music you can't be goth, but i havent been able to find any bands i like :(

My biggest recommendation for getting into goth subculture is to listen to stories from older goths. I really enjoy Of Herbs and Alters youtube channel, they're goth and talk a lot about their time in the goth scene in the 90s and early 2000s. Their content really gave me a good perspective on the history of goth culture, and they're also a really good storyteller. They also talk a lot about eating disorders and mental illness, so if that's not something you're into I'd be careful with their content. If you like Reddit there's also r/goth which has a lot of resources including history, music recommendations, and fashion!
I straight up have a bunch of goth clothing + have been into the music for awhile now. Only recent complaint is that people calling anything dark inclined goth makes my skin crawl, plus my autistic ass can't wear a lot of my clothes.
I've also been into it since I was literally 5 when I first got computer access, it just brainwormed into me IG.
Current closet favorites was a shirt that just has "fangbanger" on it and it's sheer, also a pvc black top but when it touches light a leaf pattern can be seen!
And I kinda look like my avatar, except my hair is currently lavender because I need a summer job and ik that I can just wash it out and get a weird blonde going on, but I mostly stick to red.

lmao okay so my goth awakening wasnt even related to goth stuff. when i played bratz rock angelz on the gamecube when i was like 6 and jade had super pale skin and one of the makeup palettes main colors were black, white, grey, and purple. and there was a matching clothing line in game that was like velvet and lace dresses and i looooved it so much so when i got older and actually learned about goth fashion and music it really stuck with me.
