My BF has dry scalp too and I'm so dedicated to help him get rid of it. I experimented a lot on him and nothing worked so far - but I came to the conclusion that it's stress based. He gets bloody patches too & it terrifies me. The best so far has been Dercos by Vichy (the pharmacy stuff) and some acid salicilic drops (they make everything disappear but ofc it comes back after some time). He has perfect hair even with all of this tho lol

Nooow I love this thread because for the past 2 years I made it my mission to pay more attention to my hair and I love seeing what everybody is saying. I have very thin hair and I wash it everyday (this really works for me, no damage done) - I never use a flat iron on it and I cut it regularly. I just feel like it does me no justice, either looks messy because of the frizz or has no volume. It looks lifeless :( I just cut it very short and I was expecting it to get better but I guess not.
I tried masks, shampoos, oils - everything basically. Now I use olaplex no. 3 + shampoo & hair mask from la'dor + biosilk conditioner and kerastase oil (now and then because my hair gets oily too fast). Can't say it does much so I'll have to try something else soon. Every time I come from the salon I have the best hair ever and the next day it goes back to being lifeless.

Here are some tips that I have seen and didn't get to try yet:
- what LillyAnn said about treatments and hair botox - definitely worth a try, it's on my list too!
- I used to do an oil hair mask once a week and my hair did look better a bit (not amazing results but I was not using the best shampoo back then), it was messy and a pain to wash it off so I gave up but I really want to give it a try again - maybe it will work out with my new routine, who knows.
- 5%ph Shampoo and Conditioners for flakes - that's the normal ph of the scalp and it's gonna balance it out
- thinking about trying out Ouai (I love the clean packaging)
- my friend swears by the rice water tiktok trend but I'm too lazy to try it lol maybe one day

General tips:
- microfiber towel - it is so much better than a normal towel - I like keeping it on until my hair is like 50% dry but it stays wet longer if I use it sooo another option is a simple cotton t-shirt (best solution so far, I cut some t-shirts and made cute hair wraps <3)
- use warm water, not hot! for sure
- it dries out messier if u don't use a dryer (or blow dry it - i'm not very good at this haha but it looks a lot better)
- the scalp massage brush makes my hair feel very clean and it's also rly good for the scalp because we don't pay enough attention to it :(
- don't use pantene, hs, that kind of common drugstore stuff. It will end up being a bit more expensive but it's worth it because u need less product if the product itself is good.

My mom always dyed her hair (same hair type as me) and it looks sooo good, shiny and healthy and all. I'm honestly thinking about it but I'm so scared for some reason. My hairdresser told me that some hair types tend to look better when dyed but idk how to take that. Any opinions on this?

You need to condition your scalp at least once every fortnight with professional hair care that’s meant for the scalp

I found a shampoo that reasonably (!) dried out my hair so now I have to shampoo only twice a week (as opposed to every day, before I started using this shampoo). Now I have dandruff but hey I’m all for less frequent hair washing :p
also I started using blow dry sprays and my hair never looked (and felt!) better

i had awful frizziness with my hair like no matter what i tried. what fixed it for the most part has been applying a gentle hold gel as part of my routine- just enough to tame those flyaway hairs! frame of reference is 2C-ish hair, dunno porosity tbh, longstanding issues have been frizz, and simultaneous dry seeming scalp yet hair that would get visibly oily quite fast. further details below~
shampoo: medicated shampoo first for scalp psoriasis blagh, obvi don't need it unless you need it lol. then, a gentle shampoo. or clarifying shampoo every week or 2, depending on product build upif clarified hair: hair mask (+ olaplex every once in a while) for 5-10 minutes while shaving/exfoliating/washing body/that kind of thing. brush through hair with a wet brush with head turned upside down for even distribution. rinse out entirelycondition, let it sit 5-ish minutes while shaving/exfoliating/washing/etc. wet brush upside down. rinse out like 80-90%while hair is still dripping wet, apply styling products (upside down, and with a wet brush). in my hand i put a pea-sized amount of curl cream, ~8 spritzes of leave-in conditioner, mix up in hand, apply and brush. then, i take a little larger size than a nickel of gel, apply and brush.
THEN, the surprising crucial step for me, is passing the showerhead over my hair for a split second. it does wonders for application for me! i don't even fully get WHY. it definitely helps get rid of excess product, but for some reason i feel like i notice better results doing this even than when i just use a little less product. idk if it helps them sink in better or...?wrap hair in either microfiber hair towel, or any old cotton t-shirt. let it sit for roughly 15 minutes (can go longer if your hair stays wet for a long time, mine takes FOREVER to dry). clip up hair in alligator clips so air can circulate thoroughly and aid even drying. if you choose to blowdry, wait until your hair is pretty dang dry to minimize damage.
This is just what I've found works for MY hair, so my #1 suggestion is play around with it. Pay attention to what you do on days you like how your hair looks, and just tweak it and tweak it and tweak it until you find what works for you!

I can provide what products I use if you wanna know any specifics :) I esp recommend the gel, but for the life of me can't recall the name of it and google isn't being any help. Also, I've found my hair can get overloaded by protein, but that ALSO my hair really tends to not react well to products with aloe. When looking into it a couple years ago, I found something or other about aloe mimicking protein or something?? Honestly, if you haven't looked into protein/moisture balance I HIGHLY recommend doing so. If my hair is overloaded with protein, it gets super frizzy and almost feels like straw. And a LOT of hair products have proteins of some kind, I've honestly had kind of a difficult time over the years finding hair products that suit my type while also not being packed with protein!! Who knew?
