Growing up in Britain gives you a certain sense of arrogance I feel.  I've grown up thinking that everyone will speak English and the majority of the time, regardless of where you are in the world, someone does.

I've travelled extensively (although never been to USA or South America) through Asia and Europe (to non English speaking countries) and never had a problem.  I try to ensure I know hello, thank you, goodbye etc wherever I am going but it doesn't always work that way.  I would love to have languages under my belt.  Sadly I was only taught French when I got to high school.  We know now that 12 is late to pick up a language.  I'm pleased my sons have been taught languages from a young age (5) and picked them up easily.

Maybe one day I'll take time to learn another language but there's so many other things I want to learn first!

In America I feel like we have a bit of that arrogance as well. I re-call being in school and despite having foreign language offerings people rarely saw them as serious courses. Personally, I grew up bi-lingual and have always been a fan of languages. I'm currently working on improving my Spanish fluency and hope to soon get fluent in French as well.

Our government has mandated that English be spoken by everyone as a second mother tongue. They now start teaching it in first year of school (age 7 or 8). Sometimes I think that Danes speak better English than the English do. We do not use English curse words correctly, I have been told, although everyone uses and knows them.

Same in Norway, I wouldn't be shocked to find they learn it in first grade. I myself started learning English in 3rd grade, but when we moved into more difficult lectures in 4th grades I fell off the wagon :p So I had to teach myself English as an adult, lol. Never picked it up again in school.

Currently studying Spanish, and picking up a bit of Korean on YouTube. Not that I'll ever use it, but I think it's fun.

It helps that you already know Spanish, Portuguese should be less difficult to learn because of your knowledge.

English may be as it is now, but it feels like Mandarin will replace one day. As you probably know, China is growing more and more everyday, and if one day the chinese people decide to take control, there is a certain probability that they will succeed. Then again, that is just a theory. But just imagine your kids learning that language in school. That's how it feels for those (including me) who had to learn English as a second language. It may sound like a bad thing, but I love learning languages so don't take it the wrong way haha
