hi, fish gang!
life unexpectedly caught up to me recently, so it's been a little bit, but i'm back with another talking point / chatting thread for you all!
when i go out shopping or thrifting, i try to find the worst items i possibly can to show to my friends like i actually want to try it on - at this point, it's become a competition to find the most awful piece.
so i got to thinking - what makes a piece of clothing bad?
based off of that, here's some questions for you all to answer at your leisure!

what makes you immediately put an item back, even if it looked good at first glance?

is there a texture you absolutely hate?

is there one thing you think ruins every item?

is there a trend you're glad is gone?

how do you feel about sequins?

and one extra, flipping this prompt on its head: what "ugly" items do you have that you absolutely love?

answer any or all of these below!

something that'll make me put an item back is if it has a v-neck or deep scoop neck. i cannot stand those necklines mainly because i am rather busty and don't like my chest to be seen a lot. i'd rather wear a turtle neck or even just a regular shirt that doesn't have such neckline. i really don't like wool texture it makes me recoil and anything similar that gets small debris stuck it it puts me off too. i think what depop has done to a lot of clothing kind of ruins it in a way. children's shirts being marketed as crop tops, cutting and mangling vintage items to make it 'aesthetic', and similar trends. it's better than fast fashion but it's almost always overpriced and poor quality. i've had to finally admit it but i'm glad the galaxy print is gone, i held on to it for too long lol. but if it comes back i will embrace it. i don't mind sequins too much as long as it doesn't fall all over the place. 'ugly' items i love are 'trashy'? i love wearing hoodies and pajama pants but it's seen as bad to be worn in public? at least that's what i've been told growing up but wear whatever you want lol. also on a weird note i have a vivid memory of eats gems and sequins off of my shirt as a child. i loved to have them in my mouth but why did i destroy my clothes!?!

cap sleeves are an abomination they're not flattering on anyone. 3/4 sleeves, especially in t shirts are also awful

so far as stuff other people find ugly, i think loud prints and bright colors are cool. and you should definitely clash prints. we also need to bring back giant slouchy hobo bags, enough with teeny tiny bags

haha since i barely answered like two of amber's questions before i also have another one.
and it's also sleeve related im sorry.
another trend i'm glad is dead (can we consider cap sleeves dead? they're dead right? that was my "if i pick up something with this i immediately put it down" answer if i wasn't clear. I found a flyleaf shirt last month and it had cap sleeves and i immediately put it down)
anyways another trend i'm glad is dead are those women's blouses with the like... super thin fitted look everywhere except the oversize french cuffs and huge starched collar. They were usually like pinstriped. I think anne hathaway might have worn one in the devil wears prada in the scene where she drops off the book at meryl streep's house??? that kind of ryan evans from high school musical look. godddd. im sorry i love it in context of course but im so glad it's gone... for now...

omg i totally get the hate for cap sleeves, they are so unflattering on almost everybody!!

i think my biggest clothing pet peeve is any piece that should be opaque but isn't, like white pants that you can see dark undies through or shirts that are fine in low light but look translucent under sunlight/stage light. so many embarrassing moments have been caused by getting dressed in low light, then going outside and realising everyone can see your old ass bra. ugh.

on the other hand I love those sheer long sleeve prints shirts that were a micro trend in 2019 (i think?) i thought they looked so cool but i was too much of a wimp to wear them and i want another chance now lol

yes i'm flexing but i speak japanese fluently and when i see a piece of clothing with japanese text which is completely wrong and makes no sense and it's supposed to only "look cool", i get so disappointed... but obviously it's cheaper to use google translate rather than hire a translator or just simply consult someone who speaks japanese, am i right??

QueenQueer

(For context I live in a big city so it probably doesn't happen as much in small towns)
I hate how most thrift stores that focus on women's fashion around the city only have clothing that fit skinny people. I'm not skinny or fat but I have never found anything my size at a more popular or "branded" thrift store. Because they usually target women.
On the other hand, I notice thrift stores around the city that are very supportive of the lgbt (maybe they're queer-owned), and very inclusive for all body types. One even had signs in the dressing rooms that assured people of their beauty whether fat or skinny.

edit: omg i didnt see that quoting removed my entire other reply.
I said essentially that that sucks QueenQueer!! I wrote that it might be maliciously curating a collection in order to curate customers on the part of the skinny girl thrift stores, but i think it more likely goes back to the idea of invisibility of fatness, and the owners of those stores are probably just to thoughtless to think there are people who are bigger than them when procuring their items, it's like they subconsciously (like because of fatphobia make no mistake, they probably arent intentionally being malicious but they are like being malicious still) put blinders on and their worldview gets so narrow they can only see and think about things from their own skinny viewpoint :/
conversely, i think that's exactly why queer owned thrift shops are better about including a range of sizes and ensuring they have inventory to fit all body types, because queer people are another group that has faced invisibility and being silenced and pushed to the sidelines, so of course they recognize another group who is typically made invisible by mainstream society and media

nooooo not the hypebeast style ToT i hate that too. putting brand names and labels prominently on things should have been nipped in the bud a long time ago, now you have people going around looking like walking advertisements
