Rich people will literally raid thrift stores for the "trend" of it being "cute" and "greener", all while dumping all of their worn once fast fashion items there, which won't be of any durability to the people who actually NEED to thrift. It's so gross... You used to be able to find a lot of great quality items in thrift stores, but now you're lucky if you find anything both cheap and that won't crumble to dust after a few months, so many good places turned into shein dumps now... We need to start gatekeeping the stores, show up with your yearly tax report if you want to purchase anything, let us poors enjoy having SOMETHING lmao

Exactly what Decadance said, if you have the means to, it's definitely ethical and sustainable to get tailored things, from great material. Not only will the things fit you perfectly, but being crafted carefully by people paid sufficiently means they'll be extremely durable (from the get go, and the possibility to be fixed up later if they do wear out). The issue is buying Too Much, and that the way society is built, poor people have no other option but to thrift if they also want to not participate in unethical consumption paths (tho I'd argue, coming from the side that's too poor to consume in any way but second hand, when we Do get stuff from fast fashion, because it is the only affordable option at times, we keep those things for years. I've got stuff from middle school that I still wear. The problem is these things definitely wear down much quicker than what I've bought from thrifting and was originally an 'expensive' high quality item).
With wealth comes the possibility to Choose ethical options. Without ressources, thrifting is the default. Behaving ethically isn't only about personnal behaviours, but thinking as a whole, what action can I take so that the WHOLE can benefit AND act ethical.

I'm def not saying any1 with a stable income should stay away, but specifically those wealthy enough to be able to get other ethical options, especially if they want to brag about their irreproachable ethical approach to fashion.
