Started collecting Monster High dolls last month. I think I should stop buying them now but who would reject an almost complete prereboot one for very small price. Do I have a problem? Probably.

Hey everybody I'm just looking for a little advice and I kind of want to get this off my chest. im sorry this might be a little long. but like anyways.
for context i'm vietnamese, and one of my close friends is from ecuador. i'm gonna call her X for this! So over the years i have realized that X is kind of OBSESSED with asian culture and it's really starting to weird me out. she only eats asian food, she only listens to kpop, her dream man is asian, her two closes friends are both asian, shes always posting ramen/milktea/anime boys, etc... and recently she got a panda tattooed on her arm which was kind of the last straw for me because its just... so stereotypical... it's just really weird to me because people have started to mistake her as asian, and it's like her core personality trait right now?? am i being an asshole? because she's a really great friend and i dont want to confront her or be mean about it !! it just bothers me because she won't ever know the racism, the standards, and all of the cultural struggles that we share.. i am all for cultural appreciation but i just dont understand why someone would obsess over another's culture like that.. what do you guys think? am i an asshole for thinking this way??

It sounds like they are using this obsession(I think it is safe to call it that) as a way to escape from things in their own life, while exploring what they like and who they want to be. They sound like a young person to me, so I wouldn't be surprised if they still have a lot to figure out and are still trying to find and settle into their own identity as well.
I fail to see how others mistaking her as Asian is her problem, unless she is purposefully altering her physical appearance and getting cosmetic surgery to appear more like she is of Asian descent somehow?
If someone sees her dressing a certain way or acting a certain way, them making the mistake of assuming that stereotypes equal a person of x descent(it applies to any, really) is their own fault, it just sucks that you have to hear about it, since you know otherwise and it already irks you a bit.
To be honest, it just sounds like you're tired of hearing about the same stuff day in and day out, but you are also kinda assuming that she is uneducated when it comes to the things you also mentioned(struggles and racism) just because she would rather focus on the aesthetic and the superficial aspects, as well as all the stuff that gets exported internationally. I could be totally wrong, but you didn't say otherwise, so I doubt it's a topic you two have talked about at length?
Anyway, in an effort to preserve your friendship, I would say just try and carefully steer your conversations into safer waters, talk about other interests and see if you can encourage them to branch out into other areas as well. The shitty thing about obsessions is that while it may feel really good in the moment, you really do miss out on quite a bit of other stuff while you're only focusing on the one thing.

FunnyValentine, I'd like to give my two cents on the situation. I'm white, so I don't have experience with racial prejudice but I've been on the other side. In 2018 I got into kpop and it got a little out of hand. I've always liked Asian food and thought Asian cultures were really interesting to learn about, especially since it is SO OLD but when I got in to kpop, I went a little overboard. All I wanted to talk about and listen to was kpop, it became a sort of hyperfixation for me. It took ME realizing that I was treating these people and cultures in my head like objects and just fun little things to learn about for something to change. I definitely think if you want to mention it to her, you should, but all of the work has to come from her. I still love kpop and Asian cultures and would love to visit lots of countries all across Asia someday but I took a very large break from kpop to get my head screwed on right. As I said earlier, I'm white so you don't have to take what I've said into account but I wanted to provide some information from the other side. I really hope that one day she can see that her obsession is a problem and that these are real people and real cultures.

I talked some about the problems in the mental health forum but tonight was the last straw with relying on my mom. She showed me that I can't rely on her if I need things to be done and she's selfish and thinks of herself first. I gave myself a talk, and I'm going to be patient until I have opportunities to support myself, because right now I don't, and I'm never going to rely on someone else again. I made myself some soup that I've been asking my mom to make because she makes it really good and it was the best goddamn soup I've ever had. I most definitely put energy into that soup because it was spicy (it's not usually a spicy soup) and it was my last empowering puzzle piece. I'm the only person that is guaranteed to be by my side my entire life. I'm the only one I can rely on. I can do this. I can be patient until I can get a job and save some money but I'm ready. Nobody is ever going to make me feel the way I did tonight ever again.
