Do you know if the items in the shops that don't quite make it to where they are supposed to show up on the body in the item preview also appear in the same place where they show up when you buy them?
For example some tops don't sit on my avi's chest, but instead float about a quarter inch to the top left leaving my mid drift and shoulder exposed in a preview of the item. If I were to buy that item, should I expect to see the same thing? I'm pretty new and low on bimbo bucks, so I'd like to not waste them if I can manage it.

Sometimes, after buying an item, putting it on in My closet it may fit. But usually not.
Shopping centre is full of unfitted items and developers keep on promising to repair it.
You can take a risk and buy such item and then post your outfit in Help section - there's pinned thread for that. This way I've always had my items matched in few days.

That's such a good question! Greeny makes an excellent point that many items in the shops fit this way, and our developers try to make it right for us when they have time. However I remember the struggle of being new and having those jobs that didn't pay well, and the struggle is real! May want to choose a different item and level up a little before trying to force an ill fitted item to work. First impressions are KEY!! The choice however is always urs, Cant not wait to see what designs u come up with.
