hi everyone! i recently started thinking about the fact that we have both a pop culture and a cosplay fashion category even though they're pretty close to each other.  for example, you could dress up as a superhero for a cosplay, but a lot of american super heroes are considered to be apart of our pop culture.  so i wanted to see what everyone's opinion was on this and how you interpret both of these terms? personally, i would consider dressing up like a cartoon as a cosplay and dressing up like a celebrity as pop culture.  do you have outfits in both categories? what are they?

youre pretty much spot on :) ive always had hatsune miku as my cosplay look, but ive had a ronald mcdonald look in the past that i had set as popculture for a time and then career.. i did a doja cat look and kept it under "music."

ive noticed a lot of people just use them as two cosplay categories, though there's also sometimes a distinction between popculture being something more "real" like a celebrity or a live action movie character who is very normal (such as uma thurman's looks from kill bill or pulp fiction) and cosplay being anime, cartoons, or characters from high fantasy.

the categories are kind of loose, as long as it fits the "theme" it totally works, like i said i had ronald mcdonald as my career look for a while, and it did pretty well in outfit fights :)

At some point I think they become interchangeable. I've done a lot of random stuff for both sections and did well in fights. I do tend to do cartoon or anime for cosplay and "real life" for pop culture, but my current pop culture look is Edna Mode from the Incredibles, so not a hard and fast rule.

I would have to agree with everyone. I would argue that some characters can transcend cosplay and go into pop culture if they are incredibly popular (like a character from the MCU, or a brand mascot) and cosplay has the opportunity to be more niche. I've also noticed that cosplay tends to lean toward anime and video games, where pop culture pulls from American films and television. But personally, as long as the look is iconic I support it  ┐(°‿°)┌

For me pop culture revolves around people rather than characters. I can see myself using the pop culture category to make a look of an actor for example, or a specific character an actor has played, whereas cosplay is specifically for fictional characters for me. Anyway, I appreciate having both categories.

To me cosplay is dressing up as a character from a Comic Book, Video Game, or Anime.

Pop Culture on the other hand still mystifies me! *Kisses*
