It's been a couple days! I got into a couple of mobile games on Friday and have been neglecting BL because of that again. i don't want to overwhelm this thread with facts nobody cares about, yet that's exactly what i'm about to do!
heres a bunch of facts about tuberculosis!
did you know that tuberculosis is directly responsible for:
-cowboy hats
-tim burton's art style
-New Mexico being a state
-women's hemlines becoming shorter
and many more seemingly unrelated things!!
tuberculosis is both the most deadly infectious disease (to humans) of all time AND one of the longest surviving infectious diseases ever! TB in humans has been around for ~9000 years!
it is STILL one of the most deadly diseases around, even though it is treatable and curable!
it will kill 1.6 million people this year alone, and that's due to the plentiful medical resources simply not being accessible in poorer countries! people from rich countries never have to worry about dying from one of the most deadly infectious diseases ever, and that's the definition of injustice - its mind blowing. rich countries have all the supplies they need to save millions of lives, but they just dont.

one of the biggest problems with treating TB is antibiotic resistance, and that can be tackled by just giving patients larger doses of rifampin! the only reason they dont is because they're losing money that way! rifampin was given in smaller doses originally because it was rare and hard to source, but it isn't anymore! now, there is no reason to not give patients higher doses other than money. the world sucks! :D

Like, most people think of TB as a lung disease but it can affect other organs. I have had patients with abdominal TB (TB in abdominal organs, like intestines).
Another fun fact is that countries have different approaches regarding TB. Some countries give out a TB vaccine. Other countries focus on screening for TB, such as the Mantoux skin prick test, blood tests, & chest X-rays. The Mantoux skin test will give a positive result if someone has had the vaccine.
