I would like to point out that while one may not die from getting infected with covid, it is likely that having it will permanently change your body. Two examples of how other viruses leave permanent changes to the human body; the chickenpox and the herpes simplex.
Chickenpox, after being destroyed by our immune system (destroy being somewhat of a misnomer here since the virus will actually remain) will become dormant in our bodies. It can be later reactivaded by stress, which is how we get the shingles. Not so fun, would preferably point blank never get infected in the first place.
And herpes, dear old herpes. My mother has it so me and herpes have been neighbours forever! Herpes will hide itself in our nerve cells and whenever we get stressed it will travel to our skin cells and destroy them, causing the blisters herpes is infamous for, by which it releases the virus. See, it can tell the body isn't doing so hot and so it seeks out another host. This too will be a lifelong effect. Would rather not get infected in the first place.
So the reason people are wearing masks is because some of us, even those of us likely not to drop dead, would rather not have a life long covid named companion in our bodies for the rest of our lives. Anyway, I declare it mask night at Founders Inn by my rights of absentee State Minister and a cool cat from the future. I have a gun that shoots chewed bubblegum and a robot cat (for some fucking reason) and I'm not afraid to use them!

Some of what Alien said, I was just coming here to point out, so thanks for beating me to it!
HLB, I actually agree with you, that the fearmongering our media engages in has been extremely detrimental. It's one thing to give it appropriate attention, and to help spread helpful and accurate information, but I've noticed that many media outlets, especially the ones that are running 24/7, actually seem to hyperfocus on it, and that helps no one.
The way I see mask wearing is this: If I had no one to protect, I would be less likely to wear a mask. I have little concern for myself and am fairly confident that if I contracted Covid, I'd make it. And if I didn't well, no loss on my end, I'd be dead.
But my mom has COPD, and by the time she's in her 60's, she'll probably need oxygen. If she were to contract Covid, it would kill her, no doubt about that.
My dad is in alright health, but he has chronic asthma and heart problems, so his chances of coming away from a battle with Covid unscathed are somewhat low as well.
My husband takes medication that increases his susceptibility to Covid and other things. I have no idea how he would fair if he contracted it, and I have absolutely no intention of finding out, he's suffered more than enough.
These three are all immediate risks because I live with them. But if I extend my net to family, more people come into play:
Two of my cousins were born premature, Covid would hurt them without a doubt. My oldest cousin is the 11th worst asthmatic in the country, Covid would kill him outright. My uncle has an advanced form of bladder cancer and is undergoing chemo, so Covid would likely kill him. Most of my aunts and uncles are all getting up there in years, and aren't in exceeding good health, some better, some worse. Any of them contracting Covid would likely at least hospitalize them. My grandma wants to live to see 90(she's 87) and because Covid risks increase within the elderly population, it would quite likely kill her and my grandpa.
The reason why I decided to include a family history here? These are the people that I wear a mask for whenever I leave the house. I don't give two shits about myself, even on a good day. But I care about these people, and the impact that their health, safety and happiness has on everyone else around them. I want them to live their best lives, and I don't want to do anything that could potentially put that in danger.
My family isn't unique either, I consider most families to be like my own, more or less, when it comes to who is capable of getting Covid and surviving and who will most likely succumb. When I think about it, even if I walked this world completely alone, who am I to put the life of someone else in danger? A beloved family member, a most trusted friend, even a loyal coworker? It's simply not my place to endanger others.

HLB, it's good that your friend didn't get too sick but the fact is that the virus can be deadly to some and that's why people wear masks. Masks help to avoid droplet infection.
