It's so quiet in here, don't you think? Thought we might start a small tradition of the monthly discussion corner. Every month I will choose (or you can give me an idea) a specific topic that everyone can comment on. Let's try?

Just yesterday the first Insta contest ended and I thought we could discuss the role of social media in the world today.
Not so long ago, I listened to the story of one girl who said that she took a weekend break from all sM. It allowed her to rest and turn off her head. But after the weekend she came back to them, so there is that kind of need to be present anyway.

Currently, I cannot imagine my life without MS. I haven't turned on the TV for a long time, so I actually get all the information about the world from there. I live far away from my family and many friends and this is my form of contact with them. However, I have noticed that it is really time-consuming.

And how is it with you, do you imagine the world without social media, or maybe you are not present in it? Let's discuss.

Of course, anyone who wants to join the discussion, regardless of the state they come from :)

I don't really use social media.
I have Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest accounts. I made them when I was blogging to try to help promote my blog. But I don't use them (nor my blog) anymore. I didn't really see a benefit and there were too many negatives. People try to start fights over everything. People send DMs with porn or ads. etc.

Never happened to me that I received some DM with porn :o but I'm rather observing others, not posting or commenting. I try to avoid comments on fact, to avoid negativity.

Well, it wasn't all bad.

A few years ago, a friend gave me a stuffed animal. I created an Instagram account of the stuffed animal with food: https://www.instagram.com/eatingwithaupa/
It was kind of a fun hobby. I haven't touched it in a while, though.  (Edit: I just looked. The last post was 18 months ago! And before that a whole year.)

(cw mentions of food and disordered eating)

unfortunately i know social media has a bit of a negative affect on me. i have this obsession with perfection and beauty and i know some of the habits i've developed because of it aren't exactly the healthiest, mainly around food. this is of course in part because of the career path I've chosen, but social media doesn't help.

i do love how it connects me to others, however! i can learn and explore and discover new things, get inspiration, etc! hell, social media is how i found this BL! so not all bad.

a social media-less world would be a slower world. much slower

hmm i feel social media is so interesting and connecting, however i do find it to be a bit addictive. i’ve curated my Instagram to be only the content that i want to see, (which is mainly fashion girls,) this has become a blessing and a curse because while it’s inspiring, it’s sooooo hard to log out.

TW: ED, r*ape culture
i think social media is pretty interesting, i have it myself, but having it comes with problems some people (esp: teens) see and like ig models and want to be them, this can cause promotion of EDs (intentionally or not) making it harder for some to be comfy in their bodies, also the inappropriate comments left by certain creeps of the internet on profiles can be disgusting and push and normalize the idea of sexualizing strangers this can push to cat calling, SA, etc. also some forms of media have large amounts of groomers making it not a safe space for anyone.

despite this, social media can have some pretty good things, like a community of people that hype eachother up, create a safe space amoung others, share hobbies and ideas and are willing to educate one another on topics is great and needs to be seen more :)

I think social media Influencers can also promote misinformation.
I have been working at a store recently and we get calls all the time asking if we have liquid chlorophyll because apparently someone on TikTok claimed it cleared up her acne. But, when you ask at an accredited health professional, liquid chlorophyll probably won't do that. (Dermatologist gives his view here: https://www.insider.com/tiktok-trend-claims-drinking-chlorophyll-water-heals-acne-2021-4)

Liquid chlorophyll probably won't harm anyone. But social media misinformation & fake news can be more harmful. Think about misinformation regarding an election. There's a lot of misinformation that gets spread around about the candidates.

Social media probably played a role in some of the riots that occurred in modern times. I don't really know about Parler, but apparently that is a social media platform that was involved in the Capitol riots in the USA.

There was a local case where police used social media to spread misinformation about a situation. A woman was driving home one night with her nephew and her baby son. The police stopped her car, arrested her and the nephew, who were both later released without charges because they hadn't done anything wrong. The police then took the baby, took his shoes off, and took photos of him & posted on social media claiming his mother had abandoned him barefoot and something like, "See, the police are helpful. We're going to take care of him and find him a new home." (The mother has since sued the police.)

Point being, a lot of misinformation on social media. There was misinformation on the internet before social media, but I think it spreads around more with social media.

Oh gosh, it reminded me how one youtuber said she was using hand sanitizer for acne. And I was young and stupid and thought it was brilliant...
From the other hand, social media educates me really a lot. Like now about vaccines, rights of minorities. In past about politics and why is it so important to go and vote.

it’s sooo important to fact check on social media. it’s dangerous to take everything for fact and can lead to a waste of time and money, (at the least.) however, i’ve heard prior to tiktok that chlorophyll is pretty good for the body, though the acne-clearing properties is a bit of a reach.
