What are you guys opinions on social media generally (stuff like Instagram, X/Twitter, Reddit, and so on)? I think that social media became too monopolized and have turned into a more toxic thing than i'd expect. I used to be in it a lot, but now i've left my accounts on Facebook and X. The rest i only use sometimes. I still like internet a lot but i prefer to use it to better and less toxic purposes.

i use mostly instagram to keep up with artists i enjoy and my friends, but i agree that it's been turned into digital adspace rather than the online community it was intended to be. same goes for twitter, though tik tok seemed to be made for ads as it joined later in the game and favors short form content. youtube is an egregious example of once being a place for creatives but now gets away with 10 ads in a five minute video all while harassing you to buy their premium service. that probably why i use xl so much LOL, it hasn't been monetized to hell (yet)

social media is so addictive and especially toxic to young minds!! it makes me so sad to see kids glued to their screens scrolling through short tiktok videos instead of playing outside or engaging with creative hobbies :-( that being said there are some really positive aspects! i find the social aspects of XL to be much more fun and i really enjoy the creative and educational media you can find on the web :-)

Social media is just so exhausting these days, even if you don't post on your page. Whenever you want either to watch some cute videos or talk to people, you'll always be blasted by things you don't want to see, such as fake news or tons of ads that are basically targeting your whole existence. There are many days when I just use it just to post my creations, and nothing else. Some detox from social media from time to time is feeling so good.

I have social media accounts but I never really use them, only once in a blue moon or something, the only social media I really use daily is Tumblr
I have actually done a research on the effects of social media back when I did my Social Work study and it turns out that Instagram is the biggest offender in making people feel insecure and depressed because of all the pictures they see of attractive people and/or people living the good life and comparing themselves to it and thinking they can never achieve what they have while being unaware of how much of these pictures are staged and/or edited
Makes me wonder if tiktok has overtaken instagram yet with that. I don't know about others but I am using instagram less and less these days due to the way they've changed the app. I also only really follow people I know.
