This might be a bit of a deep one, but I've really come to like this site and the community so I feel safe to share. Recently I've started receiving assessments for undiagnosed illnesses/disabilities, things that definitely should've been picked up on as a kid, but that's another story.
One of the things that has come up is Autism and ADHD, and I was wondering if anyone else has gone a considerable while without this being picked up on before? Suddenly a LOT of things all make sense now! There's always been this reason for certain things that I never knew before, and it's quite relaxing to finally find out now. Knowing that there are certain things I struggle with because of my disabilities and that I'm not just "lazy", "rude" and "airhead" has really made me feel better about myself.
I'd love to hear about anyone else's experiences with this kind of thing if you're comfortable sharing, and I'm here to support anyone who needs it <3

I definetly understand you, although I dont think I have autism nor adhd. I´m pretty sure I have bpd as I match alot of the symptoms and criteria, it would also make sense considering my upbringing. Figuring out things about illnesses surely makes alot of things make sense.

I didn't discover my autism until adulthood, and now several years later I'm realizing that I probably have ADHD as well. It's a heck of a combo! I relate to such a discovery helped me feel better about myself too. Especially once I started letting myself have certain accommodations and found the world opening up a ton more

been trying to get diagnosed with autism for a while because ever since i started looking into it it just makes a lot of sense...like one of the biggest factors is that i wasn't communicating as well as other babies so i had to go to speech therapy to properly communicate to people, where i could finally talk at 4 years old- but i was mute at school due to how anxious i was as a kid.....and i think my childhood was so rough because i just wasn't like the others and had to mask without knowing the entire time haha

a bit different but i've had undiagnosed chronic pain for 5 years, i got an official diagnosis a couple of weeks ago of fibromyalgia and it gave me a lot of clarity and was a sense of relief to finally know what was making my life so much more difficult than what it was supposed to be. not everyone likes labels but having a diagnosis can definitely help with coming to terms with yourself and understanding why your body behaves as it does

this isn't really related to the above conversation, but i have a lot of tics when its cold. i dunno if its a nervous disorder or somethin, but all through summer and spring i am usually totally fine, little to no tics at all, but as soon as the weather starts getting more chilly, i have a couple of different tics including suddenly letting out this high pitched yell (which i always apologize for because i hate the sound of it genuinely), and this violent neck jerk/head jerk which is currently the most frequent. i think i should probably get diagnosed because i kind of want to know whats going on, like what if it's something serious, i wasn't even calling them tics until recently because i know thats like .. a tourette syndrome term and i didnt wanna seem like i was saying i had that, but its the only word for them i think. i've had this since i was a young teen ? i have memories going back to when i was like 13, ( not many memories before then generally due to diagnosed PTSD ), of these yelping and random jerking tics. i'm not here to get bimboland-diagnosed or validated or anything, i kind of just wanted to write it down when i saw this topic. stay strong yall !

i wasnt diagnosed with autism until i was 19! though i had suspected i had it since i was 17 i think. it's really common to fall through the cracks bc of masking in shit. wish people had picked up on it (i'm not blaming my parents bc they're def both neurodivergent, i mean people in the school system) because i spent so many years wondering why i wasnt like the people around me in school. now all my rl friends are all neurodivergent, which was purely by accident but its swag.

I'm glad to hear about people feeling better about themselves! You're right - it does bring so much clarity. It's nice to know that the world isn't supposed to be this difficult and now we can get the help we need. In terms of labels, my parents taught me to hate them and that it was just a way to get special treatment. I spoke to my mother a lot about concerns with illnesses as a kid and she just called me an attention seeker. Now I have these labels, I don't think I'll be telling her! But because of how I was raised I learnt to mask SO FUCKING WELL I'm not surprised it wasn't picked up on as a kid. Although I do remember my teachers voicing concerns to my parents about how behind I was in school but they just played it off as I wasn't trying hard enough. I wish they'd listened, both me and my teachers new I was trying my best.
