So because it's a dressup site, we should just not care about being sensitive to other cultures? Okay, I'll remember that! :) I'm glad you also seem to somehow know what we all contribute to indigenous people as well, I wasn't aware you are omnipotent!

Sarcasm aside, I simply do not believe that because this is a virtual dress-up game we should not be mindful of the words and language we use. We were just suggesting that the name of one theme be changed to be more appropriate, since as pointed out, it is breaking one of the theme submission rules. None of us were attacking anyone or "going all sjw", I felt the tone of the conversation was very polite and everyone just trying to point out how it is an insensitive phrasing. Native Americans are a group of real living breathing people who are historically and systemically oppressed, not mythical creatures like elves or mermaids. I think showing them the respect they deserve by not bastardizing and misappropriating their cultures on a virtual dress-up site is pretty bare minimum.

You missed the point but I can't help you with that :)

Yes, Native Americans are a group of real living breathing people who are historically and systemically oppressed. So do something about that in real world, put your words into practice. That would do more good than a pretty bare minimum in dress up game :)

It's impressive how everything is perceived as offensive and in a negative light...

Respectfully, regardless of your personal opinion, the fact of the matter is that it is in direct violation of one of the theme submission rules. You have no way of knowing the extent of other people's activism off-site. My point is: we should be applying our support of minorities to every part of our lives, including on virtual dress-up games.

Well, you might see it as cultural appropriation and just a costume, other might see it as cultural appreciation and respect for native spiritual practices.
You either have no way of knowing if person who suggested that theme is maybe Native American.

It isn't a question of opinions, it is undeniably in violation of theme suggestion rules. Since you insist on being deliberately obtuse, I've done you the favor of collecting various sources you can read at your leisure detailing why the term is offensive, culturally appropriative, and in violation of rule 4 as previously stated. I have no intention of arguing with you and hope you will take the time to educate yourself on this matter. Thanks for your time LillyAnn :)

Misogynist you are absolutely right. Unfortunately it seems that its difficult for ppl to even do the bare minimum — like not comparing a historically oppressed people to fantasy creatures or literal animals. I appreciate you & the couple other ppl having this conversation with empathy & civility.

you're completely in the wrong here. the links have been given to you but since you clearly won't put the work in, i'll explain it for you.

Rule 4 of the PBFC themes states that "Themes that can be interpreted as cultural appropriation are not allowed." The use of "spirit animals" as a theme is literally cultural appropriation for a handful of reasons: Native American spiritualities are closed practices meaning outsiders are NOT allowed to participate. These are sacred practices and beliefs that have historically been destroyed and Natives have lost their lives for their cultures. Need I remind you of the 215 skeletons of indigenous CHILDREN that were found at a residential school in Canada? So yes. The use of spirit animals is cultural appropriation and the title should be changed.

Your attitude is rude and very immature. You say to do things about it in the real world (which I do, btw. thanks), but every little action counts, even something as small as a theme in a fashion game.

Oh my... this is really wild. The level of hostility is intriguing! Someone slaps the first 5 links from google search that fits their own agenda and call it education.... :/
First of, concept of the spirit animal isn't unique only for Native Americans, nor all tribes have it as a concept. Similar concepts could be found all-around the world whether they are called totems, power animals, spirit animals, animal guides, familiars and so on, and have words for it in many languages. You came to conclusion that this refers only to Native Americans (mostly because of pop-culture and New Age) and flagged it as cultural appropriation, while almost each old religions and spiritual practices had/have same or similar concept under one or another term and in various local languages.

On a side note (do your research better next time), speaking of the phrase 'spirit animal', the origin of the term 'spirit animal' alone is unclear, as well as when the term in given form got in use. As a matter of fact, the term 'spirit animal' in that exact form doesn't link to any historical and traditional Native language. When you do more in depth digging, you'll find out that the phrase is actually much newer and most likely links to the rise of New Age and with it to Neo-shamanism. The phrase itself dates from the modern age and language and is applied as a 'catch all' term for ancient and traditional concepts of various cultures that had/have spiritual believes related to animals.
Taking that into consideration, the phrase and term 'spirit animal' doesn't actually have a weight of cultural appropriation because it doesn't link to any culture in particular. Its concept links to many cultures in one or another form, phrase itself doesn't.

P.S. There is a game spirit animal actually, here's the link https://www.dravalonseek.com/spirit-animals-game , wondering are you going to burn it to the ground, to sue it, to make a doc or comic about it and spam it around, or even write a book on how it's racist and culturally-appropriative... Go, have your fun! :)
