I got into a discussion with my husband last night and we had a really interesting jam session with other people we know  and love in real life from our neighbor hood. finally the weather was absolutely perfect so everyone in the neighborhood was out and about after literally weeks of stifling heat and humidity with temps soaring at 118 degrees F and above the weather was in the 70's and a breeze blowing. we were talking with friends, and family about how people on the internet seem to not care who they harm.

Well a bunch of us took the position that we are the same people in real life as we are on the internet and that setting a moral compass in daily life is free and makes us better people. while there was general agreement with that positive approach to life  If you would not stab someone in the back  that you actually know  why would you waste time  hurting a person you only know  from the internet? As we sat there laughing at the sheer absurdity that the mental picture of plastic people evokes Ken  and Barbie anyone? My neighbor  said No really have you ever really given actual thought that the person you may have shared yourself with on the internet might take that detail and spread it on the internet after they twist it and use it to hurt you? He said it seemed to him like people use the internet to unfairly accuse others of wrongdoing, seemingly forgetting that its not robots only posting data on a monitor for all to see and read. I thought about what my neighbor had to say and thought I would open a topic here. is it ok to treat others differently on the internet than you would treat them if you knew them personally?i say its not ok  that you should treat people the on the internet as you would treat them if you knew them from your neighborhood.

Treat them how you would in person if you met them on the internet. For instance, i have over 1000 friends of facebook and I get alot of requests. I know facebook is a place to meet new people and such but if you decide to inbox me and I honestly don't know you I'm not going to act like you're my best friend from way back when . No, i wouldn't do that. I will honestly say that I dont know you and I wont continue the conversation with you. Likewise if i meet you in person, don't expect me to open up to you. I don't know you so I won't engage in any conversation. That's just me.

I don' t have the 1000 friend level on Facebook but my daughter does and my husband is close but I treat those on my friends list the same as  I do in real life and I talk to them whenever they message me.So I agree with you in that sense. I cherish my internet friends the same as I do those who are brick and mortar friends ie live in my neighborhood,or I know from school, and or chariable work I do in the community I live in of course many on my friends list are real life family, and actual friends I went to school with. so We actually know each other. if its an internet friend I tend to try and find a common interest like  cooking or scrap booking to talk about when I am messaged.rather than a more personal subject They or I would be uncomfortable with.

Normally I act like myself on the internet. If I'm trolling I do it as a joke and wouldn't hide from being who I am.

As for anonymous / not so anonymous people out there, generally cowards.

i think its important to keep it real, and there's no point in being a jerk online or offline. i think a lot of people abuse the freedom of the internet, they use it to hurt others and think there's no consequence because they can log off and walk away. However there is a consequence, that person on the other side of the screen that they were mean to is real and has feelings too.
this topic reminded me of a video, this youtuber brings up some interesting things about internet mean-ness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d2VYhR8q040 he's a comedian, but i found his video not only funny but insightful too. It kind of sums up how i feel about the issue actually.

I feel more myself on the internet than offline. Its so hard for me to speak and to think and figure out how to act in person. I'm more honest, more me and so much more happy online.

People like to think people are mean online and not offline because they aren't jerks offline - that's not true. Online you are more honest and true to your thoughts than offline, so actually a person is more 'real' online than they ever will be in person. People are a lot more afraid to be rude or mean in person than online. It brings out the best and worst of people I think. Still, I prefer it this way!

After some deliberation I must admit that people would be surprised to meet me in person. Not because I am actually rude, but rather because I am more eloquent when I don't have to speak in real-time. If there is a difference in personality, I am actually more open, more positive, more supporting, and friendlier in general when I am online.

I think Remi is right in that rudeness may prevail on the internet because a person doesn't have the guts to be rude directly to someone's real, actual face. I would go so far as to call it a form of emotional disassociation: "Because I do not see you, you are not real." Despite the knowledge that behind an account there is a real person, the troll -- called such on many occasions -- feels more secure and has a higher impression of self-worth because this other person simply does not appear to be real; hence, they can do and say whatever they wish. They can be rude and mean, demeaning and humiliating, and as much as they want.

Personally, I don't see a payoff in such behavior. You are  not making any friends. But then, if making friends were the reason the troll came online for, they would not be a troll. Myself, I like to be part of an online community and I will treat people with kindness and respect. I do not answer to troll comments and I am not quick to anger. When there is a problem, I will let the responsible parties take action to correct it, or simply use the measures given to me to ignore a person who, for some reason, should have it in for me. You know what they say, "Don't feed the troll." Truth in the World Wide Web.

I find that it is easier for me to open up to people on the internet as opposed to real life. I am kinda shy in person for the most part. I treat people with the same courtesty and respect that i want to be treated with whether in real life or online. We have to set an example for the younger people out there and we cant do that if we are shaming others for what ever reason.
