It's never my intention to hurt people. Especially online, it's just not my personality and I don't enjoy hurting people. However I do believe some people online can be highly sensitive when things are said that weren't even meant to be hurtful.

This quote by BeautyXRush is what I find insightful.   I've been thinking about this thread and waited to reply to read and understand the different viewpoints before I replied.  I don't write when I'm just being emotional.

Often people online don't understand what a person means with what they write.  More commonly they might see the internet as the world they live in as true existence.  When challenged  they tend to make very insane assumptions, because it bothers that 'internet reality' they created for themselves.  Simple opinions, and ideas very quickly turns to thoughts of censorship, or slander when radical ideas are shared very innocently.

A second problem often is extreme intoxication.  A drunk person may understand something written as a joke, but another member of an internet community might take it all together to SERIOUS. This works both ways TOO.  Extreme intoxication also comes from many legal medications, and/or very extreme mental or physical experiences. People don't often act rationally when their mind is only focused on their own problems, and tend to think everyone who doesn't agree with them, becomes the demon.  Even if the person who feels insulted was never even being replied too.   This is all together to common in American Style of politics and the use of the internet.  People will say things they would never dare say to someone face to face and that has been proven ever since the invention of a written language.  I could argue it is a Biblical true-ism made worse by the access of the written word by a mass of people without any real-world social skills or education.

When I see something blatantly argumentative I usually just ignore it.  Words are just words.  The internet is just a method of communication.  Everyone also just laughs at the video's of stupid fools who get hurt in You Tube videos for 5 seconds of fame.  So why do they do it?
To be in the lime-light, to feel important. (and maybe make enough money,  with views to viral video's to pay the medical costs of immaturity).  Historians 200 years from now are going to look at this decline of culture in a whole different light than we can even imagine right now.

I think "acting crazy" and "not rational" isn't actually the case in many instances. Heavenly, you quoted BeautyXRush who said that people can be highly senstive. In this case, arguments come to pass because one person said something another feels is offensive--the speaker didn't know that it would be taken as such, and if they don't paddle back and instead lampshade that sensitivity, well, there goes the peace. In other cases people don't want to hear anything negative to what they said, they just want people to agree with them and react harshly when their expectations aren't met.

Foremost is the problem that, indeed, the written word can be taken the wrong just because the reader decides to take it so. Person A may have said something with slight, yet relatively harmless sarcasm, intending to be funny. Person B receives the whole thing as an attack on their person and punches back. Misunderstandings are a common thing of the real world, so it comes as no surprise that it is even worse in the internet, where we cannot see the faces of the people we are talking to. I'm not even a big fan of emoticons, but when I acknowledge that something I say can be taken the wrong way in just a heartbeat, I like to use them in order to make my words' intent clear (and we could really use some emoticons here *cough*).

My personal take on this is that, when I feel offended but I'm not sure that I'm meant to be offended, I ask. Doesn't cost me anything to tell someone that I am confused and would like to clear that up before a misunderstanding erupts like a long overdue volcano. I like harmony, I greatly dislike drama.

Hi Glennis on the subject of emoticons . I have asked for them here for the very reasons you stated. not being able too see a persons reaction to the typed words they help make the writers intent and meaning more clear. I too dislike drama and arguments on the internet. and like you say its free to state that you are confused and want to know where the person is coming from.
In your neighbor hood or community in person you can see the person you are talking to and hear them so their meaning is clear. Harmony is more easily achieved  when you know exactly where a person is coming from.
