I usually get all my books from Google Play and this one was easy to find. It looks like it's gonna be an interesting but quick read.

Welcome, welcome! Just shooting a message like that will do just fine, I'll add you to the list :)
As you might've noticed, we're currently reading "The Call of Cthulhu" by H. P. Lovercraft. Just get your hands on a copy (or check the link on the first page), and join us on discussing it on the 5th of May. It's a short one, so you still have plenty of time

It's time! It is it 5th of May now, and the discussions on The Call of Ctlhulhu are scheduled to begin today. Below you’ll find a list of (a little classroom-like) questions to get you started on the discussion – but you are absolutely free to just write down whatever thoughts came to you while you were reading. The main point is to get the ball rolling.

If you haven’t gotten around to reading the reading yet (or just plain forgot about this), worry not! You can easily knock this particularly short one out of the park in an hour or so.

Some questions to get us started:

-         Lovecraft is widely known for his classics in the field of cosmic horror and The Call of Cthulhu is definitely upon the most famous of his works. Did you find the story scary? Why or why not?

-         What kind of preconceptions did you go into the story with? Were you surprised by anything in the story?

-         How did you feel about the somewhat archaic language? Did enhance the atmosphere for you? Did it distract from the story?

-         Lovecraft is frequently criticized by modern readers for his racist imagery and characterization. How much did you see these themes in this story? Did it influence you reading experience?

-         The story is told through a patchwork of second and even third hand accounts discovered and interpreted by one narrator. What kind of reading experience did that create for you?

To answer the question regarding the language… I feel like all of the literature I’ve read by Lovecraft has this archaic vibe to it so it enclaves my experience even more (tho I have to admit this is the second book I’ve read by him; + always nice to learn something new at least for me, I wonder what everybody’s thoughts on this matter is?); but also a few times during reading I had to pause and go back re-read a few paras to fully catch-up on the matter. I don’t usually read anything this “vintage” but sometimes it’s worth a try :) also as for the racism/stereotypes in lovecrafts writings I feel like he’s not the only one from that era who thought/wrote like that; it’s the way people thought at a time which is not surprising why it seems to us as somtthing arrogant / rude

I've read most of Lovecraft's work, except At the mountains of madness and some stories skipped for the collections, translated in the domestic language. It is a bit odd to read it in kinda archaic language indeed. It can slow down the reading especially for not native speakers tho it certainly helps I'm familiar with the translations.
Archaic language definitely adds on the overall atmosphere - the mysterious vibe and the feeling that it's something old, even older than Lovecraft himself. I Have the impression that he aimed for such effect on purpose to fit the lore of centuries old Necronomicon and aeons old outer space entities.

I am not done yet with reading so will come back later with the replies.

I think the "archaic" language & racism are somewhat related. For example, the use of the use of the, shall we say, "N-word" to describe a darker skinned person is racist & out-dated but was considered appropriate/acceptable at the time it was written.

I would also say the language is not necessarily "archaic" but perhaps higher level. I believe that literature used to be more for the upper class, especially as many people were not educated at that time. For example, the use of the word "febrile" for feverish is still used in healthcare, so it's not archaic.

That said, I do find his writing superfluous. I think he could get the point across in fewer words.
