Something I’ve noticed being an American and from several different cultures is that a lot of white Americans don’t think cultural exchange and appreciation can take place in good faith. Which is ironic considering America was called  a melting pot for a really long time. Which is an outdated term imo but still.
yeah im american too (unfortunately lol) & that seems like well-meaning but clueless white people overcorrecting for how shittily some other americans treat different cultures. bc lets be real, nuance is NOT our strong suit as a nation (regardless of political affiliation)

but its funny bc like....the actual muslim (& mexican, & vietnamese) people i know irl are super open abt sharing their food & music & culture. like it's considered flattering rather than insulting when someone from outside the culture thinks its cool

(unless that person just picks & chooses specific parts they like, then uses those as props to seem more interesting/~exotic~ while shitting on the actual ppl of that culture. which white americans have done w black americans a lot....maybe thats why we're so hypersensitive abt cultural appropriation compared to other countries? idk man)

Yep. Share that culture. We’re all better people for it. If some folks are pricks in how they go about it? Meh. No one and nothing can ever be perfect. But in general, sharing and appreciating other cultures is something to be celebrated, not feared or hated.

Cunning Linguist you should be proud to be an American, I find it sad that so many American born are not proud when we have so many trying to become American citizens.

i say "unfortunately" bc many of my fellow americans are hateful, callous to their fellow man, & proud of being ignorant. which is cringe. also everything is too expensive & we barely even have labor rights or proper healthcare lol. to say we could be doing better is an understatement

but thats exactly why im a hater. i think everyone should be critical of their govts & push them to do better for the people. its an important part of democracy - if we cant even shit on our own govt, then we have nothing!

I agree with having the right to complain about the government. Also, everything definitely is too expensive. You kinda lost me at many Americans being hateful, callous, and willfully ignorant. You’re allowed your opinion, obviously, but that just hasn’t been my experience. Far from it.

I do not see evidence of blatant disrespect or 'erotic' misuse here, besides the needle was poor taste and what Cunning Luiguist referred to. People, not just Americans, tend to ruin things. Happens all the time, small minded, ignorant people are EVERYWHERE. I wouldn't get bent out of shape over it. We have admin that act quickly to correct anything offensive on this site, and that should be peace of mind in itself.

Honestly, all of the outfits and accessories are preset art pieces. We have accessories for strap-ons and pubic hair, for goodness sake lol.
The only things that can be posted are store-approved items anyways. If that’s the case, it shouldn’t even be possible to post an unacceptable entry. Otherwise, remove the items from the shop entirely.
If we’re ok with someone posting themselves in a thong, with a vibrator and a needle, or anything else, but not with a hijab, then the problem would be that the hijab is not appropriate for the site. Personally, I think people are free to wear what they want. Especially in the limited environment that is the Ximboland shop. Hijab or no.

I suppose that's correct, all the items are available, but the theme isn't just any theme, it is cultural. In any sense of culture anyone could get offended if it's not honored appropriately. Any cultural contest or theme, could get controversial. If we had a Typical American Contest and someone posted a obese glutinous vomiting person or something more obviously offensive like a drug addict, someone is going to think it's funny, and someone is getting offended, even if it is debately on topic. So, I mean, it is sad people ruin it, but you're right maybe cultural themes have no place here for the sake of being respectful.

It sounds like we basically agree on most points. We only differ on the importance of authority protecting people’s cultural sensibilities. My personal opinion is that no one is inherently entitled to protection from offense, because that ultimately shuts down speech and expression. I say run the hijab contest, let people do their thing. If someone posts something truly controversial and unacceptable, then the court of public opinion will get ‘em. Oh, and our actual trial system.
But definitely don’t deny people’s right to free expression just because someone could post something stupid, or someone else could get offended at something relatively innocent. If that were our policy for everything, we’d have to shut the whole site down. We need to be inclusive of people who like hijabs, but understand that inclusion comes with the risk of being offended sometimes. The only other option is exclusion, which definitely can’t be the right answer.

Very well put! I agree, like how bad could it really be? But again people get real left or right, ya know. It's unavoidable. I agree with you. If a contest like this takes place, so be it. I rest assured the Ximboland System is MORE than reasonable with their decisions! I'm not sure who all is on their team, but if they are anything like Dean Winchester, I have full faith in their judgement.
