Hello! Out of curiosity, I was wondering what the rest of BL think about hosting a contest that excludes citizens based on sexual orientation.

Personally, I think this is discrimination which I thought the citizens of BL were against. This thought came to me when I noticed the current Pride contest which only allows contestants that identify as LGBT. While it states that the host will not investigate whether all contestants are LGBT, it also says "unless it is known they have explicitly stated otherwise anywhere on this site". Some of you may have taken part in a forum post that asks what citizens identify as. I have responded to this chat as have many others. Never did I think revealing my sexual orientation could exclude me from activities here.

This is very hurtful as I still have a fear of coming out as bi myself. I still identify as straight/heterosexual but attend the pride parades, volunteer with non-profits geared toward assisting the LGBT community, and have a large number of LGBT friends. They have always welcomed me and treated me with such kindness despite my own personal conflict with my sexual identity.

What are your thoughts on contests that exclude individuals based on their sexual orientation?

Were celebrating inclusion and diversity through PRIDE month

Yes. It is acceptable due to the theme of the contest,

things being exclusive to a certain minority group arent discriminating against those outside of that group, theyre just not for them specifically, complaining about lgbt threads excluding cishets is like complaining about gyms excluding people w no interest in working out or cinemas excluding people who dont want to watch movies. theres absolutely no problem w an lgbt centered thread being lgbt exclusive, this is true even more so in the context of contests as these involve rewards for participants and/or winners and allies shouldnt be rewarded just for being allies, espy over actual lgbt people.

imagine this: you've been invited to a birthday party to celebrate someone's birthday. you participate. you eat cake. you get a party hat. but it's not your birthday. if you were to insist that you should get presents too, or people should sing happy birthday to you, just because you showed up and/or were invited, that would be pretty fucking rude, right? birthdays are only once a year and this person is really excited to have an event dedicated to their celebration. they invited other people to share the celebration with, but that doesn't mean it's everyone else's birthday. if you were to make it about yourself it would be really disrespectful to them and the fact that it's their birthday, and people telling you to maybe not do that isn't discrimination towards you for having your birthday on a different day.

this is the same thing, except worse, because in the former example the person didn't gain the right to hold a birthday party through decades of subjugation and bloody conflict.

this is how lgbt people are made to feel all of our lives. we are made to feel unsafe discussing who we are because of cishet people. i am allowed to not want my oppressors included in something that is supposed to be celebrating my community in spite of the homophobia and transphobia perpetuated by cishets. hope this makes sense.

It’s ok if you’re not ready to come out or are still conflicted. But if you’re going to be an ally, I think it’s important to recognize when it’s time to let the LGBT+ community be seen and heard. It doesn’t mean people don’t appreciate you as an ally, but it just simply isn’t about you.
The whole world innately includes people who identify as heterosexual, whereas LGBT+ peole are regularly excluded, including from things like actual human rights, accessible healthcare, and adoption, just to name a few things (there’s plenty more that they’re excluded from). A contest that excludes straight people isn’t discrimination... it doesn’t mean that you don’t matter or that your conflict with your sexuality is invalid. But its focus is on pride as being a part of the LGBT+ community. Please let them enjoy something made specifically for them without making it about you.

How am I making this about myself? I genuinely do not understand how this is about me :(
I am only asking for thoughts and opinions on what you feel. To start, I shared how I felt. I respect all of your opinions and comments and should not have to be afraid to share my own. I am allowed to feel hurt, discriminated against, and excluded just as those that disagree are allowed to feel that it is acceptable to exclude/include individuals based on something they have no control over. Your responses are already helping me look at it from a different perspective and understand the purpose.

I am sure I am not the only individual that would want to partake in this but feels they are not allowed to because of their sexual orientation. Especially since the actual parade has been cancelled. I couldn't imagine being excluded from attending the Pride Parade simply because I identify as a heterosexual female.

the problem is that it is not a pride parade. there is a thread for that, if you want to make a look and post it there for people to see. but as a cishet person i don't think its fair you participate in a contest for lgbt people. i personally cannot see why you would want to participate if you arent lgbt. pride is not a party for you to wear rainbows for one or a few days a year and then go back to not fearing for your life. your participation would make pride seem like a costume. for us it is our whole life every day of the year. i am not discriminating against you for being cishet, no one is saying its wrong to be cishet, you just have no place in this contest unless you are lgbt. my point is that we are excluded from many, many things, brutalized and killed for being who we are. you can handle sitting out a contest.

you being present at a pride parade doesn't take anything away from the actual lgbt people present (assuming you're not obnoxious)
you participating in a contest means that you might win instead of an actual lgbt person. and if you're upset about pride events being almost universally cancelled, imagine how lgbt people must feel. online stuff like this is all we got this month. and for some of us who are closeted and/or in unsupportive households, sometimes online stuff is all we got PERIOD. we deserve a space to ourselves for ourselves.

you feel excluded and discriminated against because you're making it about you, whether you mean to or not, and that is something you need to work on. not everything needs to include everyone. exclusivity isn't always bad.

also, like misogynist said, this isn't a theme or costume. this isn't "here's a space-themed contest also only people who are attracted to men can participate" or something like that. this is an lgbt contest, for lgbt people.

If i created a Bimbo/Female empowerment contest only for bimbos and himbos were not allowed to enter, would that be okay?

Females have been oppressed for centuries.
Females are a minority group.
In my opinion, I think such a contest is discriminating against gender. I think it says that the support of himbos is unwelcome almost as if men couldn't support female empowerment simply because they are male.
