that's a great story blecky omg it's so creepy i agree i wouldn't be able to stay in that room after learning that.
lol and that thing with the music... I played CDs at night when i was a kid because i was afraid of hearing a ghost and my house wasn't even haunted! Or well... it probably wasn't.

When I was a kid we had a house with two stories, my family's bedrooms were on the top floor and we had another spare room on the 1st floor that was more of a narrow entryway from the back yard. On the blueprints it's labelled as a "maid's room" though of course we never had any hired help or anything that's just what it was labelled on the plans. That spare room had a small bed and tv and that's about it, and sometimes, instead of dropping us off at my abuelita's house when they went out, my parents would bring my abuelita over to babysit us in our house and she would stay in that little room when she spent the night.

Now, my abuelita was a very boisterous woman. At her best I would describe her as being loud and gleeful, a woman who was eager to dance or share a joke or something funny she saw. When she would babysit us, even in her little house, she would often watch mexican variety shows in addition to her novelas and the fútbol games she was constantly watching.  Whenever something vaguely funny or interesting happened in these shows, like an animal doing cute or clever trick or some weird little clown skit, she would call out our names loudly from the other room, usually singling out one of us she really wanted to see whatever she just saw, and she'd call out to us in a loooooong drawn out and heavily accented fashion, like "Deeeeeeestinyyyyyyy!!!" (not my real name btw, but my name always gets mistaken for it so forgive me for going by it) and in her old woman voice I'm sure it sounded like ghostly wailing to the neighbors, but that was just how she called to us at all hours to get our attention. No big deal, just an old woman desperately wanting to show her grandkids a funny dog on TV.

So one night when I woke up to the sound of her, a thin wailing reedy rendition of my name calling up to me from downstairs, I really didn't think much of it. I knew she hadn't been there when I had gone to sleep the night before, but it wasn't exactly unheard of for my parents to go pick my abuelita up to spend the night with us if they had plans they needed to take care of the next morning, so despite being a little confused I entirely trusted that the sound of her voice meant I would be going to humor her and watch a chihuahua walk across a tightrope or something. Nevermind that it was 3am.

I've always had trouble sleeping through the night. Ever since I was a little kid I've consistently woken up at 3am on the dot, and as I grew older and got interested in ghost stories and urban legends I learned to be creeped out by that fact as 3am is known as "the witching hour" or but back then, although I was afraid of the dark, I wasn't especially creeped out just by the fact I had woken up at 3am. I just noted the time like usual and crept out of bed to my bedroom door.

Now like I said, I was afraid of the dark, but even though I opened my door to a dark house, I wasn't particularly afraid because I was simply answering that familiar call.

"Deeeeeeestinyyyyyy!!" She sounded far away, and somewhat frantic as usual. We couldn't pause or rewind the tv back then of course, so coming when she called us to watch something was usually a matter of timing. We would need to be quick in order to catch any replays or if whatever was done, be it a magic trick or whatever, would be done again. If not, we were often just running to catch the tail end of whatever she wanted to show us.
Although she was calling me in that frantic way, I remember taking my time calmly walking down the stairs, I remember how cold the wood was under my bare feet. And I remember being fairly surprised she wasn't in the living room when I reached the bottom of the stairs.

Now I know I said there was a little TV in that back spare room, but she never really used it. We had a much bigger, nicer TV right there in the living room, and that's where she would usually watch her shows if she was at our house. In retrospect, I also realize the little TV in the back spare room wasn't connected to the cable... I think it had an antennae maybe, but the only use I remember it having was the attached VCR we'd use to watch our tapes while hiding from the rest of the house and the inevitable housework. But anyways, at the time I was only a little more confused. My abuelita was in the house despite me not remembering her being there when I went to bed and she was watching TV but she wasn't in the living room? It was definitely weird, but I did hear her calling me, so she must have been in the spare room. And just like that my child brain smoothed right over any weird inconsistencies, and I made my way, still walking confidently through the dark despite my usual fear, to the back room.

The spare room was in the corner of the house, at the end of the darkest hallway that served as our laundry room. The only natural lighting in that hallway came from a skylight above the washer and dryer that bubbled up out of the roof. I remember it being moonlit, a fairly clear night, but also windy. The bubble shape of the skylight meant you could hear any grit from even the lightest breeze tapping and cracking against it, and I definitely remember the distinct sound of tapping as I walked down that hallway.

Then I opened the door to the spare room.

There was noone there. It was completely dark, save for the moonlight streaming in from the large windows of the sliding glass doors, and completely still, save for the waving whipping shadows from the tree branches outside being swept around in the heavy wind.

Whatever was calling me, wailing out my name in a thin, reedy, frantic voice, was calling me from outside.

My heart stopped. My stomach dropped.

And I bolted, dashing all the way through that dark house I'd just so nonchalantly strolled through, back to my bedroom, slamming the door and diving into the bed I shared with my little brother.

I have no clue what I heard that night, if I even heard anything. Maybe I just thought I heard my abuelita calling me in a dream, or maybe I was sleep walking, though if I did I haven't since and my sensation memories of that night seem really clear to be a dream. My mom certainly didn't hear anybody calling me, but she did hear me bounding up the stairs and slamming my door. She came to check on me not long after, and was very irritated that I woke her up in the middle of the night.

I've wondered what it was ever since. Could it be something that could mimic voices trying to tempt me outside? Was it really just a dream? Or maybe it was La Llorona since other local kids have plenty of stories about her, though we were nowhere near the Valley in that house, and I doubt she would stalk up and down the pitiful arroyos in the desert near my house. I also doubt she would call me specifically by name lol, she's supposed to be lamenting and searching for her children not one specific child with a fear of the dark!!

If anyone knows anything else from the New Mexico area that might mimic voices and call out to people, let me know lol. Since I drive through New Mexico in the middle of the night somewhat often I'm also horribly afraid of running into La Mala Hora which I read about in some urban legend site as a kid... though... that name just means The Evil Hour haha I don't know if the urban legend site got it wrong or what but I always connect that back to 3am as well. She's just supposed to be some omen or whatever, a lady you run into at crossroads that portends death in your future, be it tou or someone close to you... Again, though I make the connection with 3am, that doesn't seem to have anything to do with spooky voices.

edit; oops i was writing this so long, i started writing it before alexa pro posted a story!! that's a really beautiful story alexa pro, i'm glad at least in your dreams he was able to say goodbye to you

In Sweden there is a common superstition that if you step on a manhole cover with the letter A on it you get bad luck. Most manholes are marked with A, meaning avlopp (drain). But the rarer manholes marked with the letter K for kloak (sewer) are believed to grant you luck in love.

Most people don't believe in it, but everyone knows about it. I avoid stepping on them if I can.

lol i did the same thing!! Usually i would leave a trail of lights wherever i went and run between light switches it pissed my dad off so much. I guess it's an instinct since we can't see well and as a kid it's hard to think rationally about it??
tbh i thought i was totally over it but my wife had to go on a trip recently and having to sleep alone for the first time in years did make me way more creeped out in the dark again! it's fine now that she's back though lol i will just continue pretending i completely got over that fear

Okay, so I'm going to tell the story about the first time I used a Ouija Board properly. Now I say properly because as a child I literally used a Ouija board to learn how to spell. My mom kept her board under the TV set, and I never had any strange occurrences. I attribute that to multiple entities keeping me safe, because I know my mom used to talk to some dark things with that board.

Now onto the story (names have been changed for anonymity):

One of my friends used a Ouija Board frequently, we'll call her Day. She'd told us a lot about her experiences, and she dealt with a pretty severe haunting. First of all, she used it by herself. She came from a bad home life and was using it when she was lonely. All of this is a red flag, don't do it. Long story short, she ended up with a demon and another inhuman entity (I hesitate to call the second entity a demon). The first one called himself "The Big Bad Wolf" because she had a werewolf mask in her closet. The second one called himself 6. 6 regularly tried to protect her from The Wolf, and she'd sat on her bed watching the board go back and forth while she heard thumps of fighting in the attic above her.

I'd always listened to her stories with rapt attention, as did my best friend, Lee. Lee had been able to see spirits our whole lives. We'd known each other since we were in kindergarten, and were closer than ever in high school. At some point Day had brought her board to Lee's house and there "The Wolf" referred to himself as "Rumpelstiltskin". They had spent the whole session trying to figure out the demon's real name so they could get rid of him. It was clear he was haunting Day herself, and not her house. We took to calling him "The Fairytale Demon", since he always referred to himself with fairytale references.

So one day we decided we wanted to all get together and use it. Lee and I were super excited, and our original plan was to go use it in a cemetery. Don't do that. Now Lee's mom knew not to do that. She'd let her kids do just about anything, but she wasn't going to let us use a Ouija Board in a cemetery at night. At best we'd be arrested for trespassing, and at worst we could have gotten cursed or something. Instead we decided to play at Lee's house. That was fine by us, because we knew her house was haunted.

So the day of, the group is me, my boyfriend (I'm gonna call him Dick because he was a dick), Lee, her boyfriend Brandon, and Day. My boyfriend wasn't originally part of the plan, but he only lived a few blocks away. All of us except for Dick were planning on staying the night, and we joked about how his mom would absolutely flip if she knew what he was doing. She was very Christian and would not have liked that he was doing the occult.

We decided to start our adventure in Lee's bathroom. It was an old style with a tiled shower separate from the bath. Lee always told us there was a male ghost who hung out by the bathtub, and a very shy female ghost who sat in the shower. We all really hoped we could talk to them, and I especially wanted to reach out to this female ghost because I wanted to make her feel safer. She was always scared. We had enough room in the bathroom to sit around the board, and Dick had a video camera. I put my foot down and told Dick that he would be the cameraman and not touch the board. I didn't want something to follow him home, and he'd really only came along because it was a co-ed sleepover. He eventually relented and we started our session.

One of the first people we got tried to convince us he was Richard Nixon. We thought it was hilarious (Lots of spirits will pretend to be celebrities or scary figures) and called him Richard even though we knew it was some random ghost. We knew the likelihood that someone was messing with the board was low. All four of us were very serious about the occult. Day used this board all the time, Lee was like a 3rd generation wiccan, Brandon was Asatru (Norse Pagan), and I was a baby witch at the time. The only one who would have had a mind to move the board as a joke was Dick, and that was another reason why I'd made him observe and not participate.

After a while we stopped getting replies. We couldn't get either of Lee's ghosts to come forward, and we decided to move the board to her bedroom. This was a terrible mistake.

When we got started in her bedroom, it didn't take long for the energy in the room to shift. The planchette moved faster, and we could all feel this buzz in our fingers. It was almost like the planchette was electrified. The responses we were getting were getting vague and cagey. It just felt wrong, but I seemed to be one of the only people to notice it right away. We had the lights off in the room, and usually the longer your eyes are open in a dark room, the better you can see. But that night, the room seemed like it was getting darker.

Eventually Day asked if they were talking to Rumpelstiltskin. It became very clear that we were. Behind Lee was a bookshelf built into the wall, and I couldn't stop staring at it. It looked as though there was a CRTV filter over the entire wall, the only way we could describe it was fuzzy. After many more ominous responses from the board, I decided we needed to close the board and end the session. Surprisingly, I was the only one who wanted to stop it. I had to argue with my friends for multiple minutes before they finally agreed to close it out. As soon as it was done we moved into her living room to avoid the bad vibes.

I was laying with my head in Dick's lap while we all chatted in the living room. After chatting for a good half an hour, I noticed Dick had gotten quiet. He was just completely spaced out. I even waved my hands in front of his face and he didn't respond. He didn't come back to us for another hour, mostly because he was pushing his curfew and I didn't want him to get in trouble. After he left, I talked to my friends about how weird his behavior had been. (After the experience I mentioned it to him and he had no recollection of any of it. He could not remember me waving my hand in front of his face or anything).

We decided to sleep in the living room, and Lee was the first to fall asleep. Day fell asleep not long after, and it was just Brandon and I. We both agreed that as they fell asleep, the energy in the house started to change. We had a few of the light on, and the shadows just seemed to get larger and darker every time someone fell asleep. The sun had gone down before we even started our session, so this shouldn't have happened.

After Brandon and I had been awake for about an hour, Lee got up. She was in a really perky mood, which was really bizarre because she wasn't very bubbly on any occasion, especially after waking up. She didn't seem totally awake either, and she didn't have a history of sleepwalking. She got up giggling, and skipped back into her bedroom. This was a goth girl skipping like a 5 year old into a room that we'd all been freaked out by. Brandon and I went and got her, having to practically drag her back in the living room. She tried to argue with us the whole time.

She fell back asleep almost instantly. I was really creeped out by all of it and begged Brandon to stay up with me and make sure everyone stayed safe. He agreed, but eventually he fell asleep too. Now it was just me keeping guard over all of my friends. I was staring across the room at the hall and into the bathroom. I was honestly shocked everyone else could sleep in such a condition. I was quite the insomniac at this age, but Lee had always made my sleep schedule look like an "early to bed, early to rise" kind of thing.

After a few hours, I noticed a weird light in the bathroom. When my eyes focused, there was this transparent image of a woman standing in front of the sink. Now the sink was directly in front of the shower, so I knew it had to be the woman in the shower. I wasn't scared, she never felt malevolent. I saw her turn towards me and promptly disappeared. She thought everyone was asleep, and I must have scared her.

I can't remember if I ever fell asleep, but the next day was as normal as any other day. The fairytale demon didn't leave Lee alone, and Brandon had to get his dad to preform a ritual to force the entity out of the home. The demon never left Day, and he was still attached to her the last time I saw her, which was over 10 years ago now.

While this was the first time I used a Ouija Board, it wasn't the last. The best advice I can give when using a board is to know the paranormal history of whoever your using it with. Even if they're not being actively haunted, it important because whatever used to haunt them can find them. Ouija boards are kind of like a beacon. The other advice I can give is to set intention before you start using it. State that you don't want anything malevolent to speak to you out loud. It may seem silly, but it's helped me and I've never had a malicious attachment. The only time I had a haunting was when I let a ghost stay in my home because he was funny. I miss him.
