thank you for your reply, i'm not sure how the tone of this is going to turn out so if this sounds aggressive or condescending i don't mean it to be, just writing what i know and believe.

i do not conflate every jew in the world with israel, but it is true that about half of the world's entire jewish population lives there. that does not mean the government is fully representative of them and approved by its citizens, certainly not in recent years and CERTAINLY not right now, but many polls have been done on whether israel should exist and the highest percentage i can find of jews saying no is 11%. and it's true that people have been antisemitic in their comments about israel whether intentional or not, it can be a subconscious thing or they just spread someone else's antisemitism without recognising it for what it is. my opinion on what is and isn't antisemitic will always be informed solely by what i see the majority of jewish people saying, because it's not entirely my place. i have been a victim of antisemites targeting me a few years ago which is what initially got me passionate about this, but it was quite surface-level and nothing compared to what jews who are far more connected to their culture experience in their lifetimes.

the reason jewish people needed a safe place is because they were treated horribly and expelled from not only western countries, but virtually everywhere they have gone, after initially being expelled from their homeland. a large amount of the jewish population of modern-day israel returned there to escape persecution in the middle east and north africa, where there used to be tens to hundreds of thousands of jews, and there are now almost zero (or actually zero in some countries). doesn't take a genius to work out what happened to them.

but there are many, many reasons why israel exists in the way it does today, western countries have helped but israel does not exist solely because of them. several massacres and wars led up to it. arab leaders of the british mandatory palestine collaborated with hitler and his crew during their reign, and in 1947, after the UN voted to partition palestine, the mufti-led arab higher committee published a leaflet stating that they have taken the "final solution" into their own hands, to be "solved only in blood and fire". several massacres occured against jewish people in the first half of the 20th century, and lots more before then, so they absolutely didn't "live in harmony" pre-1948, like i have seen many people suggest, whether they are being clueless or deliberate with their attempts to rewrite history. the US is probably israel's most important ally & they are close for a multitude of reasons, it does send money to israel, quite a significant amount for israel but a drop in the ocean for the US. never lived in the US so it's not really up to me, i don't have any impact on that. i overall don't think it's good for either if israel is reliant on US aid. i wouldn't say it is totally but it does a lot.

i am just talking about what led up to israel's reformation from around the 20s to 40s here because that is what i think your reply was concerning, what happened after that there are many books about already, and i'm not sure if it would be a productive use of my time to write all of that here. obviously inhumane things happened afterwards at the hands of israel and palestinian militias, easy to find out about and everyone who follows this closely already will know about them. it does feel a bit tone deaf to not mention the nakba which i don't deny, there are lots and lots of events that are important because of the huge length of this battle. i have already spoken a lot and i am not an encyclopedia, just a person

saying western countries have "helped" is a very... generous use of the word lol. my main point is that the land israel currently occupies was not britain's to give to them nor any western power and while jewish people do deserve to have a space to feel safe, it cannot come at the expense of others, especially on land they'd already been occupying. i personally don't believe in the right to return in a religious sense (i don't support it for any religion), and thus don't see "reclaiming" that area as a was to foster safety and long term acceptance. no one's religion comes before another's life.

in regards to the anti-semitism, i was more so critiquing the capitalist drive of the us and western powers and that they have before put profit over people, even in a genocide. i do see how this could be interpreted with an anti-semitic lens, but i wanna make it clear i was throwing shade at western powers and how their influence here has made this a cash grab (not to mention the oil fields israel has already leased out to oil companies under the gaza strip, a fact which makes me certain that gov entity has a huge economic edge to this).

just dropping this al jazeera story here. this is after the christmas eve attack on maghazi refugee camp. what do i even say? the amount of death and destruction the iof inflicts upon palestine leaves me without words. no one's religious safe space comes before another's life, especially not on this scale.

This response may be a bit scattered as I am between classes, but I hope to address most your points:

I started talking about Palestine on here because my heart hurt. You talk of returning humanity to interactions, but seem to have ignored the point that I was talking about this in the first place for that very reason. I was distraught at the escalation of violence, at the bodies, at the destruction, and shared that with you all not only as an attempt to voice some of my grief, but to show others that their grieving of this was normal as well. The debates that followed were a stunning display of our collective critical thinking skills and it serves to remind us that we, as adults, have the power to find correct information and it is a duty to unlearn what is no longer correct nor helpful.

You speak of a peaceful mid solution: there is no “mid solution” to genocide. But I can respect the call for compromise on a larger, more rhetorical scale of human interactions. The polarization of beliefs that has occurred is the result of many things (I, as an American, partially blame Reagan for repealing the Fairness Doctrine) and it’s incredibly important for us to have these debates/discussions in a public way, even on something seemingly inconsequential as Ximboland, as it can help remind us of all perspectives and force us to genuinely consider others and our own arguments.

On the note of mainstreaming: it’s incredibly intentional. Deciding who gets what airtime allows the rich, upper, and oppressive class to determine which subjugated groups get to fight for a minute of broadcasting their suffering. It’s a dog fight, and the aforementioned critical thinking and discussing of “serious topics” is one of the few ways we, as dogs, can try and get out of this fight. Some would call this individualistic coping and say that change needs to occur on a more systemic level, and while I agree with the latter sentiment, I disagree that individual interactions don’t matter. How are you supposed to get a movement started with no people?

On the labels note: Labels are incredibly human, putting things in boxes is our whole thing. Look at how we’ve labeled nature, at the different breakdowns of species and genera, how labels can differ by centimeters on a beak. Labeling has in no way been imposed upon us, we’re avid fans of it. I think you’ve misunderstood the importance of personal labeling and how it differs in impact from person to person. A lot of those in power don’t like labels because they’ve benefited from the privilege of being unlabeled, of being the standard, of their only signifier being “normal”. Labels present them with the reality of diversity, and that can be a very discomforting experience, but a necessary one. For example, I am trans. I make it a point to let people know this because not only does it signify safety/understanding to other trans people, but it reminds those in the cis label of their cisness, of their societally imposed “normal”. It’s in the media conglomerates best interest to frame labeling as an issue, as acknowledging the diversity of humans would create a crisis, because labels and terms give people the language to talk about oppressive structures which impact each part.

I’ve got a question: what was the last book you read? Who wrote it? What was it about? Why’d you read it? I pose this not as an insult (as it’s become a bit of a jab on the internet), but as an invitation for you (and every other ximbo who reads this) to explore your own motives, what kinds of information you search for, who you trust to give it to you, and what you do with it.

Oh and by the way since it got mentioned: I hated the Barbie movie. I thought it was a corporate ploy to capitalize on social movements without actually supporting them. Never seen White Chicks though!

for the record "woke" is a bastardized term originally from african american community politics/language that has now been weaponized as a way to dismiss... well, anything and everything. in its original usage, the phrase "stay woke" meant stay aware of injustices and inequalities that the powers at be like to pretend no longer exist or only exist in isolated instances. to be "woke" is to just acknowledge that these things exist on a scale larger than individual interpersonal relationships. and i think on some level people who go out of their way to be anti-woke understand that that's what it's always meant, they just have a problem with the idea that systemic racism exists.

and additionally for the record disney casting a black woman as ariel and the black communities who used the phrase "stay woke" have almost no relation to each other. the latter did not cause the former. disney extends platitudes towards marginalized communities. there's nothing wrong with them casting a black woman to be ariel even if they did it for the "wrong" reasons, because it's obviously positive that little black girls get to see another disney princess that looks like them, but their decision to do so has nothing but the most shallow connection to african american social movements.

i view the barbie movie a little bit differently because there were people behind that movie that genuinely and truly wanted to make a movie about women and the experience of being a woman through a genuine critique and parody of patriarchy but had to do so within the constraints of what was basically an hour and a half long ad for a toy. i think they did the best they could with what they had and i'm not cynical enough to believe that them having a diverse cast of background barbies and kens was entirely for marketing/pandering reasons, especially considering diverse barbies and kens exist in real life and have for a very long time. mattel released their first barbie in a wheelchair in 1997, for example. so the barbie movie including a disabled barbie and a plus sized barbie and barbies of different races makes as much sense as them including a barbie who's been drawn on with marker and played with too much so the joints in her legs are floppy. that's just what barbie is.

i have no idea what barbie movie and the little mermaid casting has to do with the genocide of palestinians. i also think that saying this is a "conflict" is being ignorant at best, and having bad intentions at worst. this little "conflict" you're talking about has been going on since for as long as i could remember myself and was present even long before me, and i'm 23. i know because living in middle east, i witnessed a lot of things palestine suffered my whole life. i remember being a tiny child and EVEN AS A TINY CHILD i could feel bad for people dying, in 2008, i must be the first "woke" person ever! israel has been always destroying palestine right before our eyes, and it took until october 7th 2023 for the world to see, and when people finally realize that hundreds of thousands people are in pain and dying, you boil them down to "woke"? this is a genocide. this has always been a genocide. i don't want to call you a bad person because i don't even know you, but i think you really should rethink your opinions.

i think labels are important in a world that tries to isolate the marginalized from each other. how many trans people lived and died in the past without ever being able to be their true selves because they did not know such a thing was possible or even existed, because there existed no word for it? how could there ever be an lgbt rights movement without people deciding to use the term lgbt? how could there ever be queer activism or queer power without deciding that queer is a label people belong to and queer people are deserving of protection?

labels are more often than not adopted by a community rather than forced on them, whether that be because they came up with the label themselves or it was one applied to them that they chose to own. and that happened for a reason. in a perfect world, should we not need labels? maybe. we don't live in that world.

when it comes to sublabels or even microlabels, i think a lot of the time the desire for specificity comes from the desire to assert one's experience as real and valid. when you name something you are asserting that it exists and you are reinforcing it as reality in the social context. i don't want to get into the weeds of like communication theory but thats my basic thoughts on that
