They say fame and fortune can turn you into an evil witch...
Disneyworld is nothing like the other Disney parks. It's a new fully immersive amusement park experience for adults who want to indulge in the ultimate Disney adventure. Lifelike androids called “cast members” who inhabit the various lands of Disneyworld help guest play out their wildest fantasies of adventure, finding love, or being the hero. In many cases, being the villain. Luckily, the high-paying guests don't need to worry about retaliation from the cast members. It was perfect for my friend's bachelorette party weekend!!
I vividly remember being greeted by a tall dark handsome cast member who resembled Prince Eric, “Welcome to Disneyworld.” As we go up the escalator, he asks me the standard questions about my preexisting medical conditions, history of heart problems, etc. I look confused-, “Hold on, I thought you couldn’t get hurt in the most magical place on earth?” and he’s programmed with a clever retort, “only the right amount.” We stare at each other a moment before we both break out into laughter, although mine is nervous laughter.
We enter my “dressing room” and I gasp at the sight of all of the costumes- the dresses, accessories, the shoes. He shows me around, “Everything is bespoke and exactly your size.” And there’s an awkward silence as I comb through the dresses on the rack. He stands in front of me, “You want to ask, so ask.” I can hear my heart about to beat out of my chest and I ask hesitantly, “Are you…..are you real?” And he looks amused and replies in a slightly sinister tone, “Well, if you can’t tell, does it matter?”
I’m distracted by the glimmer of glass slippers locked in a display case and I can't take my eyes off them as I approach, “Are they real too?” And he quips “real enough.” I turn around and ask awkwardly, “So, is there a changing room? or a robe? or…..” And he says “Of course, I can help you. Or if you prefer, I could step outside.” And I’m frozen and stammer “ww…what do most people do?” And he steps closer and assures me, “You don’t have to worry about what most people would do.” I say in a low voice, “I understand.” And he pauses from unbuttoning my blouse and says “do you really understand, Cannabis? All our cast members are here for you, myself included.” And I step back, grab the Cinderella dress off the rack, and say “Thank you, I don’t want to keep my friend waiting. It’s her bitchelorette party weekend.” He clears his throat and says “of course, take your time” and walks out.
The android rebellion broke out shortly after I entered Disneyworld. It’s three years later, and I’m still stuck in this post-capitalist hell hole. And the craziest part- it turns out I was a cast member all along.
