Game of Thrones the TV series was never good to begin with. It had a negative cultural impact on storytelling media which lead to, or at least encouraged the birth of meaningless shock value in stories. Shock value everywhere. Is it plot-relevant? Who cares. Does it have emotional weight? Who cares. Is it tasteful and not something that will encourage racist and/or misogynistic attitudes? Who cares. So long as it's edgy and shocking, right? If it makes the snowflakes and half of the intended audience mad it must have been good, right?

now that you've mentioned game of thrones, while i've never actually watched the show, i've heard stuff about it from other people/on the internet and if anything, i'm not that interested in watching. i'm sure those issues are very present. there's one thing that often annoys me about adaptations, which is when they're not faithful to the source material (understandable because well, they're different mediums and it's not easy to carry on every single detail from written words to a more visual platform). game of thrones seems to take it to another level though, like... there's shit that's completely different from the books, like alterations to the storyline and characters/relationships between said characters, and some of it seems unnecessary imo? again, i haven't watched it to confirm if there's a good reason for such divergence, but like you mentioned, i have the impression that it's probably to garner shock value or pander to viewers/the male gaze or sth.
idk if examples are necessary, but, for example, the daenerys and jon snow thing doesn't make sense to me. in the books, they're not related and it's very unlikely they'll even meet (if i remember correctly, jon doesn't leave the wall). there are other things that bother me, but i'll finish here before anyone gets bored of my rants. unless someone else wants to complain about GoT too?

I was dead set on not watching the show, but I heard that the actors did the characters so good I wanted to see it once the final season had already aired. And that was correct, the actors were so good they made me care about them in a story I knew was gonna have an unsatisfying end, in a show I knew would hate because of the gratuitous sexual violence depicted in increasingly distasteful ways.
Far as book to film adaptations go there are more bad ones than good ones. I hear they finally made a movie out of Artemis Fowl, and oh would you look at that. Everyone hates it already. And the Percy Jackson movies... nightmare fuel. I feel like with ya/fantasy book and video game adaptations especially the big mistake the movie makers, producers etc do, is they hire people who have no real interest in the source material to do the whole thing. It's really frustrating to see as a fan of something when someone so obviously misses the whole point of the original story, even though it was right there in front of your eyes. If only you'd read it you dumb fuck. Really read it.
