i loveee Every Noise At Once so i just couldn't resist spending some more time on the site.
i started with one of my favorite genres and skipped around until i found a genre i'd never heard of, and this time i landed on "egg punk". i was surprised to see a lot of bands that i already knew and liked were considered part of this genre, despite never having seen that genre named before. looking into the genre further, i read here and on wikipedia that the genre started mostly as an anti-genre and a meme (it even has its own knowyourmeme page, goodness i guess im less online than i thought!) and was separated from other subgenres of punk as a satirical attempt by punk fans to distance themselves from more hardcore and humorless punk traditions in exchange for a more danceable, unserious style heavily influenced by new wave. it seems that since this genre was unnamed for so long, theres a lot of existing punk bands that were categorized into this subgenre by fans post-coinage. pretty cool! i had no idea about this ironic feud in internet punk spaces, lol. i still am not quite sure what eggs have to do with it.... maybe some further digging is required lmao. of what was unfamiliar to me in the genre map, i liked Fashion Pimps & The Glamazons, Man-Eaters, and CCTV; although my favorite bands on that list are probably Squid, Razorbumps, and N0V3L.
i explored a little further because i wanted to find something more unfamiliar to me, and landed on math pop. this is an indie rock subgenre that borrows the same rhythmic patterns of math rock, but with poppier melodies and more emotive vocals (i noted a lot of similarities between this and midwest emo in my listening). i'm glad i decided to explore further because i really liked a lot of what i heard from this one! Tangled Hair, Hold Your Horse Is, Pharaohs, and Clever Girl are the bands i checked out further from my scan. i really liked this one and will definitely be listening further!
