I looooove that this is a thread.
CinnamonSugar, my sister did a 72 hour stay at a facility, and she said she wasn't really suicidal anymore, but that it was mostly out of spite. She wasn't any better, though, and had to figure things out on her own. It's been a few years and things are still rough. We both suffer from Major Depressive Disorder and C-PTSD, as well as ADHD. Considering the latter two both come with depressive episodes, we're a hot mess. Like, perpetually.

I wish I could offer advice but everyone is different and needs different things. Just remember to shower and drink water, and maybe occasionally eat something? I'm more than willing to talk to you about this, on like.. a long term basis? If you just want someone to vent to, or advice, or a silver lining. ❤️

I forgot to respond, but I wanted to say: everyone's kind responses to my story and questions mean the world to me. The advice, and just, knowing people are willing to listen to me, is so comforting. I just wanted to update you- I think I found a therapist who I'm going to start seeing! The root of my issues is that I was raised in a cult, so I'm gonna be seeing someone who specializes in that, bc I think so many of my issues stem from how I grew up. I tried journaling when I was really angry, and it really helped! And, I want to start drawing again for sure.

Hi Selencya. I have been inpatient 5 times, ranging from 5 days to 14 days. In my area, inpatient is different from residential. "Inpatient" refers to a hospital with a locked psychiatric unit and lots of restrictions (like no belts, no shoes, only plastic utensils, only nontoxic baby shampoo, etc.). It is meant to be short-term when someone is suicidal or homicidal. They do not really provide treatment, in my experience. They tend to be more like a holding cell where a nurse or nursing aide checks on you every 15 minutes to make sure you are still alive & the nurses make sure you are taking your medication. I have not been allowed visitors the way a normal physical hospital patient would be, but rather my friends or family could drop off things for me, like clean clothes or a book to read. I was allowed 1 phone call per day at the nursing station in one hospital. Other hospitals allowed multiple per day, but the phone was still supervised so no one could hurt themselves with it. There are no doors on the bathrooms, either, so that the nurses or nursing aides can see what you're doing--no privacy.

Where I live, "residential" is more of a long-term treatment center where someone lives at least 3 months, sometimes up to 2 years. There may be fewer restrictions and more activities. Like, some residential facilities have pools, hot tubs, horses, or other entertainment options that a normal hospital doesn't have. I believe they have more privacy, in terms of having bathroom doors. As I mentioned in a previous post, I have also heard that they offer daily individual therapy (whereas I did not even receive 1 single individual therapy session in my 5 inpatient hospitalizations). However, these types of facilities are very expensive and I cannot afford them at this time.

I have been on it & many other medications. What Ive learned is medication effectiveness & side effects really vary from person to person.

That said, here is some information. Zoloft is part of a class of drugs callled SSRIs. There are other types of meds that can treat anxiety, too, like benzodiazepines. Zoloft is less addictive than benzodiazepines, but it is also slower-acting. It can take weeks or months to feel better. Some other less addictive options include Buspar, Gabapentin,  and Vistaril.  Vistaril can be taken "as needed". One psychiatrist told me to take Gabapentin only "as needed" but another told me it could be taken daily. If you have severe anxiety & want faster relief or you get panic attacks & want something to take when you have them, you may want to ask your psychiatrist for something to take "as needed" (at least temporarily until the Zoloft kicks in).

I wish you the best.

thank you! i’ve been on other ssris before and had varying effects but it seems the general consensus online is that zoloft is more likely to have negative libido effects for some reason.

tbh i was thinking about taking something as needed for panic attacks but my doc didn’t offer. so i’ll ask about it next time because i do not have faith that zoloft will help with that. again thank you so much!!

hi! I hope I shorted this the right way so that you still get a notification, but if not- you can subscribe to a thread by going to where the thread is listed on the list of forums, and filling in the circle next to it, I think otherwise, you don't get a notification except when someone first responds to your post. I have been on here for months and just figured this out.

I think doctors are hesitant to prescribe benzos, but, in my experience, they've been a real godsend. Having something I can take as needed for panic attacks has made my general anxiety level way better, because I'm not anxious about whether I'm going to have a panic attack anymore. I still have them sometimes, and there's still the time before my ativan kicks in where I feel awful, but, being in control, makes me feel much less anxious.

A close friend of mine was on Zoloft to treat depression. It worked for her and she never complained about side effects (she had experience with a range of other meds). All anti-depressants / anti-anxieties (can) throw you around and have side effects so you have to expect some but as CinnamonSugar pointed out the effects vary from person to person and there is an element of trial and error. Unfortunately some people really struggle to find something that works for them without having too many negative effects. Getting a second opinion (from another doctor) is wise if you are unsure about the advice you have been given first up.
