Don't worry about it. Some people just come here to vent.

i saw this post on twitter and i teared up a little because i rarely ever hear this kind of stuff. my trauma has made me a sensitive person and i'm often told to "act my age" or "grow up" and stuff like that, sometimes even told that no one cares anyway. i'm not a crybaby or anything, but small things can push me over the edge and i'm rarely ever told that it's okay for that to happen, that i don't need to be thick-skinned and tough. it makes me happy to see this kind of validation for people such as myself, so i wanted to share it here for anyone else who might need it.

Trigger warning: mention of suicide
Being thick-skinned isn't necessarily a good thing.
I was abused as a child. I'd be abused more if my parents caught me crying. So, I learned to push away/hide my emotions. People called me "strong" or "thick-skinned" but I developed depression, anxiety, PTSD, and suicidal ideation.

I've been in treatment for 10 years.
It's only been maybe the last 4 years, at most, that I learned to cry again. I have cried a lot over the last year & probably seem overly sensitive to some. But crying is probably healthier than attempting suicide.

Edit: Someone expressed concern after this post. I am Not currently planning to hurt myself. This post was intended as a response to the above post about being thick-skinned.

You’re really strong Cinnamon. Being thick-skinned isn’t always what people should expect out of survivors like you and I. It’s especially not easy for people with certain disorders that literally affect your emotions entirely.. :/

Also I just got told by someone (not here!! On instagram) what’s actually derogatory and not derogatory for psychotic spectrum individuals... uh. I’m on the psychotic spectrum. They’re not. Gaslighting much...? It made me feel sick to my stomach and I had to step away because they were being so immature to someone who literally knows what’s derogatory and what’s not. People these days genuinely astound me sometimes. How are you this caught up in yourself?

I agree totally Cinnamon. I have had a similar experience i think, different issues, but as a consequence of childhood trauma i too put up some serious walls around me as a coping mechanism and was very unemotional for so much of my life. I was strong and dependable but deeply depressed and unhappy! Anyway after addressing my depression and connecting emotionally with myself and the world i haven't been happier despite the fact that i cry most days often over small things. Now when i think about how i was or see people who are like me i think that my / their so called strength is a weakness. Crying is a healthy release as long as it isn’t focussed on a single issue. And if it is focussed on a single issue then that is ok because it is an alert that you have something you need to address.
