It's complicated, I believe but then I have doubts. Like why would God have so many people, myself included go through such awful things. I've not even lived that long and I've gone through more than anyone I know. It's like thanks but no thanks, I'd rather have an easier life lol. Then again there could be a reason for all of it.
I've questioned the same thing as BeautyXRush. But if believing in higher powers helps people get through hard times then that's all that really matters. Maybe hard times are meant to be a test of faith or perseverance. Or maybe that's just what they are, hard times that we learn from.
From my understanding God (the Christian god anyway) was just a creator. He made the people he doesn't control what happens to them.
Personally I am Christian and believe in GOD,and all that goes to a point that is made in the bible Humans were Created in Gods image but unlike other mammals ie the family dog we were given Free Will as well as instinct. this means we are able to make choices as to what we believe in and accept.The Family dog does not possess free will and lives by instinct alone. they cant choose who to mate with or to use contraceptives.nor are they able to decide whether or not they believe in GOD. the upside of living by instinct alone is your family dog can and will alert you if a person is a danger or not to be trusted.I had a chow given to me in the 90's so he is dead now . He was purebred and the most gentle pet I ever had. Leo loved everyone My Ex husband and I were taking him to get neutered as we were getting ready to pick Leo up to put him in the truck a person saw Leo and asked if he could pet Leo we said sure since Leo was not a bite risk but as soon as the man reached out to pet Leo for the first time in Leo's life he backed up ,his fur ruffled and he started growling and showed his teeth. We instantly told the person STOP! don't touch the dog he will bite you. This for me supports My Personal belief in GOD.

I don't believe that dogs, and animals in general, have no free will, Bebe. Pets, of course, have most of their free will taken away by humans, who have taught them over the generations that they are dependent on them; this used to be co-dependence, by the way, not the one-sided dependence on love and food most dog-holders these days enjoy, no critique intended, merely an observation. Animals in freedom, however, need free will without anyone to tell them what to do. When a male lion takes over a pride, they will kill all the cups of their predecessor -- this is not a strict necessity, the new boss simply doesn't want the old man's genes all over HIS place. And Wolf's have an intriguingly human hierarchy; they even employ racism based on the color of the fur. A wolf with a different-colored pelt from the others will be the least-accepted of the pack, and many times leave and try and find their own made to make their own pack. Ranks in the social order and attacks on those who are different. Rings a bell.
Do I believe in God, though? No. Don't think I do. But sometimes, since my only brother and sibling died, I really want to. It would mean that he would be in a good place now, waiting for the day we will be re-united with our dead loves ones. I try hard to believe in that, because if I don't, then that means my brother is gone. Just not here anymore, and when I think that my brilliant older brother and all that he achieved in his lifetime are of absolutely no significance anymore, that this is it, it hurts worse than anything I have ever had to endure. Do I feel guilty to just want to believe when it suits me? I'm not sure. I don't think that it's guilt, exactly, that I am feeling. To me, every belief has always been about people. Even the fact that I do not firmly believe does not sway my opinion that believing in a higher power did not happen because humanity was bored once more. There was and is a reason, there is a purpose behind belief. Each person will find out what that is to them or not in time. I was always thinking that the purpose is to ease people's lives, to bring light and a glimmer of hope to it in their darkest hours. Whether this is an actual god's doing or the power of the believer's minds, I cannot say and am not sure matters so long as it works.

I personally don't believe that there is a God who made humans in his image. I think that's just an idea that we've created to justify being superior to everything else on this planet, which I really disagree with. I really love to read about ancient concepts of Gods, Goddesses and the afterlife. I think, if there is a god, it's more of an invisible force that surrounds us. I like to think of God as being more female than male - a maternal force. Whatever God is, it's in the incredible details we see in nature and things that are just too amazing to be explained.

I do believe that there is a higher being or are higher beings who oversee what we do and make themselves present when we going the wrong way. After watching an anime called Demon Diamao I started to rethink about religions. My perspective of how it was portrayed to me growing up has changed severely as a result of that anime.
See when people here the wording in his image they think of that statement in the literal mirror image sense rather than remembering that the Bible is not written in literal language. so in his image is meant to be that we have the same capacity to think ,feel and make decisions for ourselves as well as an understand of right and wrong.Other Species of mammals don't know right from wrong,they are not given the ability to choose who to date,marry or have children with . they operate on pure instinct . when they come into heat they look for a mate for the sole purpose of reproduction.They are not looking for sex because it feels good. Animals are incapable of choosing to commit crimes hence why the Service animal is not arrested for shoplifting if he/she steals a steak from the grocery store.Yes I have seen that happen LOL My father was Blind and had a guide dog named Hero well my Dad went grocery shopping and Hero even though he was professionally trained by the guide dogs for the blind school smelled some sirloin steaks as my dad was waiting at the butcher counter for his meat to be cut and wrapped Hero reached out and helped himself to the most expensive sirloin steak in the store that was already "pre-packaged".Hero acted on instinct without knowing he was stealing.The steak smelled good and he was hungry so he took it. Of course my dad paid for the steak .Where we know right from wrong and can make a free will decision to steal the steak and suffer the consequences or obtain it the right way by paying for it. However as I stated Im not here to convince anyone to believe the way I do . religion is absolutely a personal choice as is the right to believe or not believe in God.

But then I think we have that choice because we're so far evolved from what we started as? We built our own societies without the help of God. A lot of people say their belief is tested when you see all the bad things that happen in this world, but a lot of those things were created by us. I think if there is a God who has made us in their image, he must be flawed in some respect. Because we're flawed.
