I am atheist. I am American and grew up very religious. My mother is Catholic my dad is Baptist. My granddad was a deacon and superintendent at the church. I went through many transitions while "believing in God". My descent from being religious to being Atheist started with my agitation over church rules/regulations/stigmas. I have studied many different versions of the bible over the years and have changed religious "factions" multiple times before eventually becoming "non-denominational". Eventually I finally came to the conclusion that I just could not buy the tall tale of any religion. To me it is a story, a fairy tale, a ghost story that has been passed down from generation to generation. I cannot speak for the rest of the world but organized religion in America is an expectation, you are ostracized and shunned when you actually announce that you have decided that you cannot follow the expected faith of your particular culture. There are a large number of American's that will say that they don't follow a particular religion but that they are spiritual versus giving a blatant answer that they are Atheist. There is just a huge stigma still in America that if you are Atheist you are somehow a bad person. I try to avoid discussing religion too much because I do not hide my Atheism, and I will give significant evidence and apply enough skepticism over prevailing belief structures and backgrounds of those beliefs due to my own personal research on the subject during my journey to Atheism. Many times people will agree to my points but then blissfully announce that what they believe doesn't need to make sense because it is about "faith". So I simply accept their "faith" and continue with my logical evidence and facts. Sadly, there are far too many Americans that are very apt in ignoring science, logic and fact. I do not begrudge anyone their faith because I do understand that it brings some people a peace of mind to have that religious structure to give them "hope". I simply do not share those beliefs. And that is okay too.

I don't, I'm an atheist. Beliving in god starting making less and less sense in my head, and now I think about religion the same way I think about Greek mythology, for example.
