according to wikipedia that's one interpretation of the text but the phrase itself literally translates to "third gender" or "third sex":

The ancient Kama Sutra mentions the performance of fellatio by feminine people of a third sex (tritiya prakriti). This passage has been variously interpreted as referring to men who desired other men, so-called eunuchs ("those disguised as males, and those that are disguised as females"), male and female trans people ("the male takes on the appearance of a female and the female takes on the appearance of the male"), or two kinds of biological males, one dressed as a woman, the other as a man.

its also not the only mention of a third or middle gender in ancient vedic and indic society. the manu smriti references a third sex, the puranas referenced three kinds of deities (feminine, masculine, and "neuter") and one of the sanskritic epics references a group of people who are "neither man nor woman". its absolutely possible that one or all of these referred to gay and/or binary trans people but regardless the idea of a third gender (in the context of gender being a social construct) is nothing new :] some cultures didnt stop at 3. for example, the bugis people in indonesia had five recognized gender categories, by modern standards most comparable to cisgender man, cisgender woman, transgender man, transgender woman, and non-binary and/or intersex. i say "and/or" intersex because while some of the people of this gender (referred to as "bissu") were born with ambiguous genitals or other intersex condition(s), that wasnt always the case. isnt that neat?

Lmao literally all of those were used as references for gay men, so maybe don’t do research on Tumblr anymore. Some of the ones you mentioned were actually used, as what we would refer to today, as homophobic slurs. If you really wanna reach so far you break your back, at the very most a few of them could be interpreted  as trans identities, which again have nothing to do with being non binary. Being trans would not exist without gender binary, so I don’t understand how you can relate it to non binaries.

Also if you wanna use Manusmirti to make an argument you have to keep in mind that you are either supporting a disturbing level of misogyny or you are picking and choosing what you like from the text which would imply that you don't even take it seriously yourself.

As an ACTUAL Indian person, the concept is literally just used to refer to gay people. If someone called me that today, I would be pissed off and so would many other people in general regardless of their gender. Please don’t speak on my culture when you have no idea what you’re talking about, as usual.

The enby agenda latching on to another culture which doesn’t want to be associated with it is the most vile thing I’ve heard all day. Apologise for being racist and move on now.

i'm literally just pointing out that "non-binarism" wasnt invented on tumblr in 2014, im not making any sort of argument about the actual content of the texts in which it is referenced. also how do you know that the ones i referenced are used as homophobic slurs if i didnt even name them? the "neuter" deity (kinnar) is actually used as a positive self-identifier among hijras in india, who are mostly transgender women but some consider themselves to be of a third gender, though its not really the same as other non-binary genders because it's intrinsically linked with spirituality.

also im genuinely curious as to how being trans wouldnt exist without the binary and why you are claiming that especially since you are not trans? being trans and being nonbinary are not two completely separate things, non-binary identity has always been present in the trans community and in the trans rights movement. there are people who felt they were somewhere in between their assigned gender and the "opposite" gender who were pioneers for our community. leslie feinberg was an author and activist who wrote extensively about the complexities of genders and the right of self-determination for oppressed peoples. hir work was incredibly influential especially in linking lgbt liberation to class struggle. hir gender expression was male, zie identified as a lesbian, and refused any gendered terms for hirself. feinberg's literature was groundbreaking for the community, and zie was nonbinary, even though her work pre-dated that kind of terminology.

and regardless of how you feel, that doesn't stop people's lived human experiences and the history of these experiences going back hundreds of years; in peru, in pre-colonial hawaii, in native american cultures, and so many more that have been lost because of european standards of binarism. someone else's lived experience upsetting your worldview doesnt mean you get to define that person's identity for them. when you go out of your way to bring up the fact that you don't believe in non-binary genders at every possible opportunity, going as far to seemingly forget that people also use 'they' as plural in order to bring up how you don't think it's a valid singular pronoun when someone refers to their group of friends as 'them', you just look so incredibly immature

feel free to believe whatever you want; that doesn't mean you get to choose other people's words for them, and that doesn't mean that respecting others isn't in the forum rules. people are just trying to vibe and you constantly misgender them, and don't go acting like you care about the sanctity of transgender identity when you misgender me, a trans man, as well. seriously grow up.

Also, I wanted to add that it’s interesting how people who would be the first to cancel someone for wearing traditional Indian clothes to an Indian wedding (which would not be considered offensive by Indians) are also the first ones to misinterpret their culture to try and promote their ideologies. It’s ironic to try and use Indian culture to promote western identity politics when India is so conservative in terms of gender and sexuality (and no, colonialism is not the only reason why) so maybe don't appropriate their culture.

BTW you have no idea about my identity, so why are you making assumptions? Trans is literally being born as a man and transitioning to a woman or vice versa, ''ending'' gender binary erases the concept of being trans.

i literally never did that thing you just said and i genuinely don't know what you're talking about.

if there's further context i missed i'm truly sorry and i'd be interested to read more about current usage of those words, my only intention was to point out the concept and language of a third gender in history.

If you’re trying to prove that non-binarism existed since the dawn of time, you should probably reference an example that isn’t a homophobic slur and stop speaking for cultures which don’t want to be associated with the terminology you’re spewing—and incorrectly, might I add.

Transgenderism, by definition, is identifying with a gender that is not your birth gender. Since there are only two genders, it is a binary concept. Regardless of whether you think enbies piggy-backing off of the work the Trans community had done for 100s of years, the majority of trans people do not acknowledge enbies as trans. Just look anywhere beyond tumblr or your group of friends.

With respect to “choosing other people’s words for them”, I find it laughable since you’re attempting to speak for a culture without even fact checking the definition of the terminology you’re throwing out. I find it incredibly offensive and, as someone who sulks over everything, you should know better. This isn’t the first time you’ve disappointed us, however, so I can only say I expect this from you now.
