I started Prozac this morning. Does anyone have any experiences with it?

Not first hand, but I have two friends who can attest that according to their doctors, the "few" patients who experience severe weight gain (10 pounds or more, possible a lot more) due to Prozac or other antidepressants are closer to a quarter or so. If that's a concern for you, monitor weight closely and if it goes up, consult your doctor before you even hit the 10 pound mark; apparently antidepressant pounds are rather hard to shed. Both my friends can vouch for the latter. :(

Yeah, doctors do not seem to prepare patients for that risk. Some "doctors" don't even care. My friend's general practitioner actually considered calling the medical board down on the psychologist because that stupid bitch basically said, "Well, so what if you're fat, at least you're not depressed anymore." Kinda wish the man had had the stones, because my friend sure didn't. She was kind of too depressed over the sudden obesity thing. Go figure.

I took prozac for a short time. It usually takes about 3 to 4 weeks before you feel a difference. It took less than 2 weeks with me. The upside is that voice telling (or screaming at) you what to do and when to do it, shuts up. It really helps to not take things too seriously. Your emotions seem to have a vale covering them or so, they don't surface that fast anymore. Which helps put things in perspective.
The downside for me was actually the upside, not feeling my emotions so clearly anymore felt like I was missing something constantly. I also felt like the prozac was more in control than I was. And as a control freak I just couldn't accept that. I decreased the dose and eventually quit as I wanted to be in control of myself and my emotions. Even though that meant feeling anxious and angry too.
I never experienced weight gain but I am a guy so I guess my metabolism is different too. My sister who was on zoloft experienced weight gain (3 kilo's, 6-7 pounds). But after she quit zoloft she slowly lost those extra pounds too. But she also said it was harder then loosing weight you gained from eating too much and exercising too little.

Any anti depressant should not be taken long term. It is a helpful tool to help you unwind and get things in perspective and not be so anxious. But it is only a tool which doesn't fix anything. It just helps the process. Good luck Starbuck, I hope you will get over whatever you are dealing with soon!

Hey there! I have first hand experience with Prozac. I'm also a pharmacy student.

As for my personal experience, it was very sedating for me. I slept all the time on Prozac and Zoloft, and they both gave me some wildly vivid dreams (not necessarily bad ones lol). They also both made me super flat, mood wise, so I moved on to a different medication.

As for my pharmacy explanation:
Prozac is meant to be one of the more activating SSRIs and can cause some insomnia or anxiety, if you're susceptible to that. Changing to morning dosing can help if you're having sleep problems. Weight changes and changes to libido are definitely common in antidepressants, particularly SSRIs and some older antidepressants. Other common side effects are headache, dizziness, dry mouth, nausea, etc... pretty common to a bunch of other drugs too. Can take with food if it causes some stomach upset. If you're experiencing side effects from starting the medication, sometimes you need to "ride it out" as your body gets used to it. If they don't go away after weeks and really bother you, talk to your provider about switching to something else or adjusting the dose. Takes about 3-4 weeks generally to feel a difference, and about 5-6 weeks for full effect. Everyone reacts differently to medications though!

Try not to take herbal supplements unless you clear it with your doc/pharmacist. St Johns Wort is notorious for interacting with antidepressants and can cause "serotonin syndrome," which is a dangerous reaction. Essentially there's too much serotonin and it really messes with your system. Also some others to look out for are migraine meds that end in "triptan" because they also work on serotonin receptors in your brain. These reactions are emergencies and you need to go to the hospital. Typically with serotonin syndrome, you might have fever, hallucinations, sweating, fast heart rate, agitation, nausea/vomiting. It's NOT common, and definitely not something people typically need to worry about, but definitely important to look out for.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it's about 12 hours til the next dose. Then skip and restart next day. Don't double up.

That's all the major stuff, which you may have already heard from your doc lol. Feel free to ask me more specific questions if you have any!

Note: while it is great if you only need this for short term, it is safe for long term use and you shouldn't feel bad if you continue to need an antidepressant. I've personally been on antidepressants on and off for years in addition to cognitive behavioral therapy, and my daily functioning suffers considerably if I'm not on an antidepressant. It's normal. Some people only use it for a few months, and some people use it for life. Either way, as long as it's helping you, that's what matters.

Thanks for everyone's input. I'm on my fourth day of prozac. No difference in my mood, but my appetite is pretty much gone, so I've lost a few pounds. Found out the hard way that I shouldn't drink too much while on medication, but that's probably for the best. Today, I'm just trying to find the motivation to prepare for an interview next week.
